Color fun run to celebrate teen's life

A Sept. 19 color fun run/walk in Hillsboro will raise money for a memorial scholarship in honor of a local football player who died last year.

Demarius Cox, 16, died June 7, 2019, while attending a Christian camp in Westcliffe, Colorado.

Hillsboro rallied around the family in the wake of his death, and the “Demarius Lives” scholarship was established by Hillsboro Community Foundation this year.

Scholarships will be given to Hillsboro High School graduates. Recipients will be selected based on character, said family friend Aleen Ratzlaff.

The goal is to raise $10,000 by Dec. 31 so scholarships can be awarded for the class of 2021.

Registration for the Run Your Race 2K Color Fun Run/Walk is due by Saturday in order to get a T-shirt. The cost is $20 a participant and $5 for a color pack.

Registration forms are available at the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce office or on the chamber’s website.
