COLUMN: From the Sidelines

My wife, Jamie had Lifetime on the other day, and since I only was a few feet from the television, I didn’t have any choice but to hear and see part of the movie, “7 Things to do Before I’m 30.”

I’m sure it was a fine movie, but I paid more attention to the title.

At 27, I’m closer to 30 than 20, and as the calendar flips to ‘09 it’s another reminder the big-30 is not far away.

So, in honor of the movie I know nothing about, here is a list of seven sports-related things you should try before dying, because let’s face it, you’re probably already older than 30.

Most of these are easily attainable if you just give a little effort.

Dunk a basketball

  • If you are like me, this is impossible without a ladder or an adjustable basketball goal. Unless you like broken limbs, I suggest the adjustable goal. Find the right height for you, grab a ball, and run up and slam it home. You can even hang on the rim for a while as a bonus. (Since this will be your first time trying this, make sure no one is watching.)

Strike somebody out

  • This could happen in a high school baseball game, old-man softball, or even in the backyard. While hitting a home run is great, sending someone back to the bench by whiffing them is a non-verbal way of saying, “At least for now, I’m better than you.” Note: Don’t relish it too long, the batter will get another crack at you, and if he or she hits a homerun the next time, the strikeout will be all but forgotten.

Play a game of hockey on ice

  • My friends and I used to play 2-on-2 hockey on asphalt, in tennis shoes, with a tennis ball instead of a puck. That was fun, but how neat would it be to slide around on ice while trying to knock a puck as hard as you can past one of your friends? It’s not easy to find a hockey rink around here, but a frozen pond (only if it is thick enough) would do just the same.

Attempt a bicycle kick

  • Soccer is slightly more popular in Central Kansas than hockey, and a whole lot easier to play. All you need is a soccer ball and a net. Although two cones work just fine. To try a bicycle kick, which is the most popular, yet hardest way to score a goal, you need someone to give you a good pass. As the ball is just above your head, you flip backwards and swing your feet up over your head, kicking the ball toward the goal. Anyone who actually pulls this off and scores a goal is worthy of a clip on youtube.

Learn how to play cricket

  • I have no idea how to play, but it looks like one crazy, more exciting version of baseball.

Hit a three-pointer at AFH

  • It may not be easy to make the University of Kansas men’s or women’s basketball teams, but you can still make a three-pointer at the legendary home of the Jayhawks. While I was going to school in Lawrence, my dad and I ventured inside Allen Fieldhouse. We went to James Naismith court and noticed a ball sitting unattended. My dad picked it up and started shooting until he swished one as I was making sure then-coach Roy Williams wasn’t coming around the corner to kick us out. He didn’t, and my dad from Virginia now has a pretty good story to tell back home.

Coach a team

  • If you love being around a sport but aren’t good enough or just too old to play anymore — coach. I’ve coached REC and now high school and the positives far outweigh the negatives. So, if you’ve been thinking about it, give it a try. Of course, if you are terrible, don’t tell anyone you took your advice from me.
