COLUMN: From the Sidelines

It’s spring sports season.

You know when four teams that play twice a week try and cram all their games and events into seven short weeks.

At least two or three times per season, there are Marion High School baseball, softball, and track and field events taking place all within 100 yards of each other on the outskirts of town.

Most of the time there is a MHS golf meet going on as well.

It is that fun time of year where rain causes baseball and softball seasons to start two weeks late and sometimes play six games in one week.

It is the time when May is supposed to bring flowers, but instead brings showers to the Marion County golf tournament.

It never seems to fail to rain on that first Friday in May when Warrior golfers are set to play 36 holes in one day – the state’s biggest high school golf tournament.

With all the downfalls that come with a crazy sports season, there are good moments as well.

Last year it brought us a five-run comeback in the seventh inning of a softball game against Hillsboro, a state gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay, a third-place team finish at the state golf tournament, and some interesting rivalry baseball games between Marion and Hillsboro.

The season also has some of the most dedicated fans or as I like to call them, parents.

No offense to any of these sports because I like all of them, but the fact is they don’t get the attention of football and basketball, and don’t have the luxury of hiding from bad weather like wrestling and volleyball.

The parents who brave four-hour baseball and softball nights in sub-40 degree weather should be commended.

The parents who sit through all-day track and golf meets to see their son or daughter participate in one event or catch a glimpse of one shot should be commended as well.

It’s not the most glorious part of the sports season right now.

The Friday night lights are off, and the buzzer-beaters have ended.

However, if the sun is shining just right, a perfect breeze is in the air, and a lawn chair and drink sound good, you can’t beat what spring sports have to offer.
