COLUMNS: Random Thoughts

How does one get from here to there?

I suppose we started out by crawling. We did that as a baby. It is surprising that babies learn early and are fast at it. When they get to walking, look out, they can disappear in a minute.

Next came the horses. Even in Bible times and way before that, there were horses and donkeys.

Then someone thought about machines and bicycles. Henry Ford came up with a good idea. He invented the Ford. He made them so cheap that everyone could own one.

My dad’s first car was a Ford. A two-seater with no top, trimmed in beautiful brass. How we little girls polished it. We just loved to sit in it. Dad learned to drive in our alfalfa field. He would shout “git-up” and “whoa,” which didn’t affect the driving one bit. Once, we drove to Colorado. It took three days.

There were no motels then, so we slept on blankets spread out on the ground. Once dad owned a Cadillac, which was a proud day. Buicks finally became his favorite car. My husband and I had a pale blue Buick in the 1930s.

When I became the wage earner, I bought a yellow Buick sports car. I loved that car, but I finally traded it in. Those big wide doors where too much for me.

My last car was a Ford. I think I got it in the late 1990s. It is still with me. A great car, the only thing wrong is it lost its air conditioning ability. I don’t drive anymore, so we use it when we need an extra car.

I understand that the Ford company is posting a profit in our bad economy. Maybe they could teach the other car companies a thing or two.
