COLUMNS: Random Thoughts

Do you associate foods you have enjoyed with certain places and people?

I remember at a family reunion in Oregon my sister’s three young boys were begging for pizzas. At that time, I had never heard of them. My sister with the boys helped make them right there. She had some flat bread, tomato sauce, and cold meat. I thought they were delicious. I ate seafood while there, salmon, clams, and others.

In Hawaii, I ate other seafood and pineapple. I learned if you ate too much fresh pineapple your mouth would get sore.

In my parent’s farm home, we ate chicken, beef, corn on the cob, and catfish. In the summer, we had fruit and vegetables from the garden. When my mother took big loaves of bread from the oven, she would spread the end of the loaf with home-churned butter and sugar. Yummy.

My first meeting with black olives was at a ladies church group. I was about 4 years old.

Several women would get together, fill a station wagon with empty baskets, and head for a Wichita peach orchard. There you picked as many as your basket would hold. They were sweet and juicy.

There used to be a family here who had a big strawberry patch. They were small, but sweet and delicious.

Once when I was traveling in Italy I ate a pasta serving. It was covered with a wonderful sauce. I wish I could have some of that again.

Once my sisters and I were invited to a breakfast, we were served scrambled calf brains. Now that was difficult, we had a terrible time trying to eat that.
