The end of the year encourages everyone to look back and choose outstanding men as their heroes.
Teddy Roosevelt was president when I was born. I would have chosen him if I hadn’t been a baby. President Woodrow Wilson was next, was too serious. Of all the presidents there after I didn’t care for Franklin Roosevelt when he was president. Now I appreciate that he handled WWII and the Depression that followed very well. He put men to work. Our county lake is an example. His friendship with Winston Churchill was touching. Of course, he didn’t treat Eleanor, his wife, very well.
Then there was the great pilot Charles Lindbergh. I read of his love affair and marriage to Anne Morrow. I read her five diaries telling of their love affair and marriage. Recently I’ve learned that he may have had a secret wife in Germany. There he goes.
This past year Tiger Woods has been my hero. His history is bad — so goodbye.
I have a lot of old movie stars but I didn’t expect them to be angels. Clark Gable, Jimmie Stewart, and Cary Grant were on the list. So do you have a hero? I just hope some man steps up in 2010 as a leader and a man true to his marriage vow.
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, but I can think of some good ones. So I just wish 2010 will be a good year for all of us. Happy New Year.
