I guess I left out a part of last week’s story. Two brothers were involved. They saw a notice in the paper where women in Kansas and other states were looking for husbands. One brother took a chance, wrote to the organization, and received a reply. So he answered and arranged a marriage. That’s the rest of the story, as columnist Paul Harvey would say.
Lucinda Hauser, who recently died in Colorado, grew up across the street from me. She was a beautiful, young girl and a graduate of Marion High School. She married a classmate, Dwayne Reed. Lucinda and Dwayne settled in Colorado. He was the director of a museum and library at the Air Force Academy and Lucinda taught. She used to bring her daughters to Marion for summer vacations. I would take them to the country club to swim. Her parents were Marion and Harold Hauser.
In fact, the Hauser family was among the early settlers in Marion County. Lucinda had two brothers, Chris and Mark. Chris was killed in a tragic car crash and Mark now lives in Kansas City. I think Dwayne has retired from the museum.
Memorial Day brings to mind the people who once lived here. It is a time to visit with old friends and remember the people who were our friends and neighbors of long ago and we can visit about old times.
