Labor Day weekend got off to a good start Saturday with a rather overcast, cool day. Lots of people were present that morning to help with the work of setting up for the weekend, from signs and decorations to unloading straw bales, planks, and moving picnic tables. These are the unsung heroes and the event could not function without them.

Sunday found a bright, sunshiny day with a southeast breeze for the church service, which was well attended. Pastor Jay J. Beck officiated with Diana Jost assisting. The music by an extended community choir was great, and Lynley Remy was the accompanist. The rolls, coffee, and juice were appreciated by the 125-150 people who attended.

Many were at Burdick Meat Market Sunday afternoon to freeze homemade ice cream for the Methodist church concession.

Forrest and Marie Anderson attended the funeral of Jay Francis at Wilsey United Methodist Church. Lorena (Stalter) Francis was a teacher of Marie’s at Grand Prairie Grade School. Jay Francis had trucked the Andersons’ cattle through the years.

Mary Deane Peterson took Evelyn Forsberg to Al’s Café at Lost Springs for lunch Wednesday noon to celebrate her birthday, which was Monday. Dean Forsberg was a Monday night visitor of Evelyn’s.

Forrest and Marie Anderson attended a hamburger fry and potluck supper at Herington lake Wednesday evening.

Mary Deane Peterson was a Tuesday afternoon visitor of Evelyn Forsberg.

Walter Barnes of Tulsa, Okla., entertained Wednesday evening with a late supper at Al’s Café at Lost Springs. Guests were Floyd Barnes of Tulsa, Okla., Bill and Judy Peterson, Bret and Lisa Beye, Elizabeth, Cuyler, and Chelsea, Marvin Peterson and Josie, D.J. Turner, Burdette and Maureen Peterson, and Mary Deane Peterson.

Harry Schump was a Thursday afternoon and supper guest of Evelyn Forsberg.

Forrest and Marie Anderson visited Marcella Hermstein at her home Wednesday evening.

Gayla Deines visited Darlene Gutsch Thursday evening. Marilyn Hageberg was a Monday morning visitor and Perry Gutsch stopped by Tuesday after work.

Labor Day weekend guests of Forrest and Marie Anderson were Gary and Karen Korte of Emporia, Ian Korte of Lawrence, and Erin Korte and Jason Houser of Manhattan.

Harry Schump and Dean Forsberg were Friday afternoon visitors of Evelyn Forsberg.

C.J. and Pat Baker of Lawrence were Saturday evening and overnight guests of Ruth Riggin. Ruth, C.J., and Pat joined other relatives Sunday evening for supper at the home of Jack and Nancy Riggin.

Jane Rickenbrode, Wade and Morgan brought supper Monday evening to celebrate Evelyn Forsberg’s birthday. Other guests enjoying supper were Earl and Ruth Schump and Harry Schump.

Sunday dinner guests of Clint and Diana Jost were Nick and Beth Weibert and Kaylee of Abilene, James Jost, John and Torey Jost and Collin of St. Mary’s, and Pastor Jay J. Beck and Donna and family of Junction City.

Angela Basore and family hosted a party Sunday for Matthew Basore’s fourth birthday. Those attending were the honored guest, his family, Mary Deane Peterson, Valerie Love and Faith, Deb Casey, Rebecca and Emily, and Grandma Julia George. The kids played candy games and had an egg toss. Refreshments were served.

Perry Gutsch was a visitor of Darlene Gutsch Saturday after work. Perry and Whitney stopped for a visit after church on Sunday.

Gary and Marilyn Hageberg accompanied Teresa Hageberg of Topeka to San Antonio, Texas, Tuesday evening. They went to visit Phillip Hageberg, who is stationed there with the U.S. Air Force. They returned home Monday.

Forrest Anderson was the guest of honor at an early birthday party this weekend. They celebrated his 85th birthday, which was Sunday.

Thirteen members of the Burdick UMW met Aug. 20 at the church fellowship hall. Karen Carlson led devotions. She also presented the lesson, “For the Love of Children.” It had audience participation and was very inspirational and thought-provoking. Attending the meeting were Susan Carlson, Karen Carlson, Darlene Gutsch, Jean Ecklund, Evelyn Matz, Janet Matz, Lee Shade, Linda Basore, Ruth Riggin, Nancy Riggin, Linda Peterson, Donna Beck, and Ruth Ann Carlson. Karen Carlson also served refreshments. The next meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17. The annual UMW turkey supper will be Sept. 24.

Centre Girl Scout Troop #180 met recently at the home of Angela Basore and voted to give a $100 donation to the Chapman Disaster Relief Fund.

Evelyn Forsberg took Jane Rickenbrode to lunch Monday at Council Grove. Afternoon visitors of Evelyn were Harry Schump and Dean and Nanette Forsberg.

Mary Deane Peterson, Joyce Roever, and Pat Miller had supper together Saturday evening at Al’s Café, Lost Springs. After supper, they visited with Amy Makovec at her home at Lost Springs.

Dean Forsberg was a Thursday morning visitor of Evelyn Forsberg. Nanette Forsberg was a Thursday afternoon visitor.

Gene and Jackie Hageberg and Kody of Jal, N.M., and Janine Hageberg and Ashlynn of Blackwell, Okla., were Saturday guests of Gary and Marilyn Hageberg. They were Saturday overnight guests of Jackie’s sister, Karen at Lincolnville. They left early Sunday morning for their homes. They had come to pick up Jackie’s mother at Lincolnville.

Evelyn Forsberg and Harry Schump were Tuesday dinner guests of Jane Miles at Abilene and her houseguests, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Swanson of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Biondalino of Carthage, Ill. Earl and Ruth Schump of Herington were afternoon visitors.

Kaylee Weibert of Abilene was a Friday through Sunday houseguest of Diana and Clint Jost. Her parents, Nick and Beth Weibert were attending a meeting in Nebraska. Nick and Beth Weibert were Sunday dinner guests of Clint and Diana Jost and Kaylee returned home with them.

Evelyn Forsberg was a Saturday afternoon visitor of Harry Schump.

Times will change Sept. 7 at Burdick United Methodist Church. Sunday school will meet at 9:30 a.m., fellowship at 10:30 a.m., and church services at 10:45.

Marilyn Hageberg was a Monday afternoon visitor of Darlene Gutsch. Jim Gutsch and his grandson, Steve, were Tuesday afternoon visitors. They were in Burdick on business. Perry Gutsch was a Saturday afternoon visitor and did some farm maintenance for me to get ready for Labor Day. He ate a late lunch with me.

Josie Peterson of Lincolnville was a Sunday dinner guest of Mary Deane Peterson. Burdette and Nanette Peterson were afternoon visitors.

Harry Schump was a Sunday dinner and afternoon guest of Evelyn Forsberg. Other visitors were Sabrina Dunkin, Logan and Konner of Rose Hill, Nanette Forsberg and Savannah Forsberg of Emporia. They were celebrating Evelyn’s birthday, which is Aug. 25.

Ruth Riggin and Lois Peterson visited Neva Peterson Aug. 10 at the home of Darrell and Candice Denault at Salina.

Ruth Riggin spent Saturday at Salina with her daughter, Julie Sader. They did some shopping and had lunch together.

Diana Jost, Naomi Nelson, and Tom Nelson attended the Jay Francis funeral Monday at Wilsey.

Dean Forsberg visited Evelyn Forsberg Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon.

Naomi Nelson and Tom Nelson went Aug. 8-10 to Greeley, Colo. They went to visit George Sandberg, who lives there. George was a former Burdick resident, living on a farm south of the Mission Cemetery. He left this area in the early 1960s, and moved to Greeley. He was a carpenter and built many houses in that area. Naomi reports that George reads the Burdick news each week. Our best wishes go to him as he copes with his illness.

Clint and Diana Jost were Aug. 9 visitors of John and Torey Jost and Colin at St. Mary’s.

Savannah Forsberg of Emporia was a Wednesday dinner and afternoon guest of Evelyn Forsberg.

Clint and Diana Jost and Jack and Nancy Riggin attended a reception Sunday for Jerry Moran at the home of Tracy and Yvonne Brunner at Ramona.

Forrest and Marie Anderson visited with Marcella Hermstein Thursday at the Herington hospital.

Visitors of Lee Shade Wednesday afternoon were Nancy Riggin and Diana Jost.

Visitors of Darlene Gutsch this week were Marilyn Hageberg Monday morning, Perry Gutsch after work, and Diana Jost Thursday afternoon.

Diana Jost, Lee Shade, and Shirley Miller attended the visitation at Marion Thursday evening for Khrista Branson’s mother, Alice Van Buren.

Joyce and Ruth Ann Carlson hosted a dinner Aug. 14 for Khan Do, who is a student at Lawrence, and her mother, Hank Ly, who is visiting from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. They are houseguests of Marcus and Peggy Carlson. Attending the dinner were Derald Carlson of Lawrence, Glen and Darlene Czarnowsky, Duane and Karen Carlson and Carrie, Marcus Carlson, Brent and Brooke of Lincolnville, Kelsey Harding of Burdick, and Allison Hayes of Herington.

Evelyn Forsberg visited Harry Schump Thursday evening at Herington.

Nancy Hanson was a Thursday evening visitor of Mary Deane Peterson.

Lois Peterson accompanied Walt and Katherine Otte to the Council Grove Squares summer picnic Sunday at the Council Grove reservoir.

Ethan Forsberg of Tulsa, Okla., and Sammi Seifert of Lost Springs were Saturday afternoon visitors of Evelyn Forsberg. Evelyn was a Saturday evening visitor of Harry Schump.

Mary Deane Peterson was a Saturday visitor of Burdette and Maureen Peterson.

Mary Deane Peterson attended church in the park Sunday morning at Herington. Bill Peterson helped with the event. Debby Wiles, Ramona, delivered the sermon.

Harry Schump was a Sunday dinner and supper guest of Evelyn Forsberg.

Houseguests this week of Lee and Elinor Remy were Tim Remy and family and Jan Creger and family. Elinor reports lots of cooking and company. Tom and Lynley Remy, Tad and Tye Remy of Manhattan, and Katie visited at various ties with Lee and Elinor and their houseguests. Jan Creger and family left Tuesday noon for their home in Missouri. Lee and Elinor and Tim and Healther and family went Wednesday morning to the Eisenhower Museum at Abilene. They went to Salina for lunch. Tim and family left Thursday for their home in Michigan.

There was a large crowd attending the community ice cream social at Burdick United Methodist Church fellowship hall Sunday evening. Those attending enjoyed homemade ice cream with all the fixings – cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and other sweets and toppings. Nancy Riggin and her committee were in charge of the church-sponsored event.

Gayla Deines visited Darlene Gutsch Thursday evening. Perry Gutsch, Anthony and Whitney of Herington were Sunday afternoon and supper guests. They did yard work for her and burned some brush piles.

Dan and Linda Peterson went to Fort Scott Aug. 17 to watch the state All-Star Babe Ruth game. Their grandson, Tate Omli of Brookville, played in the game.
