We had one of our biggest crowds ever — 87 people eating with us Sept. 10. Hilltop residents and St. Luke Hospital retired personnel helped make the crowd, plus fried chicken on the menu.

Probably the biggest draw was the apron program given by Thelma Blosser. She grew up working in restaurant kitchens, starting at age 11. She also was a waitress. She has a long relationship with aprons! First she read a story about all the uses of an apron, from gathering eggs to wiping tears. Thelma wore a costume similar to Raggedy Ann. She had a doll with a matching costume. After Thelma showed aprons, the audience was invited to share.

There was Pauline Edmunds’ full-length bunny, Larry Blosser’s shop apron, Leonard Klassen’s pant-leg style apron, and Janet Bryant’s Elvis apron, complete with Elvis potholder “because he’s hot.” Many other aprons were shown with stories behind them.

Mayor Mary Olson wore her apron and helped clear tables. One of our guests was Barbara Abbott, also an apron collector. A good time was had by all.

We also welcomed Iva Unruh as a guest that day.

Two birthdays were celebrated this week, Estelle McCarty and Irene Richmond.

Join us Sept. 24 when Shirley Bowers and Ellen Darrow will give a musical program after lunch.
