Family gathered Nov. 7 at Colbert Hills Country Club in Manhattan to celebrate Tillie Hein’s 102nd birthday, which was Nov. 8. Her oldest granddaughter, Debra Scott Dody, of Manhattan, hosted the event with help from Tillie’s daughter, Dolores Scott, and her companion, Bill Remington of Emporia, and her son, Donald Srajer, and his wife Carolyn of Omaha. A buffet dinner of roast pork, scalloped potatoes, baked salmon, lemon rice, dinner salad, and rolls was served. A two-tiered cake decorated with fall flowers finished the meal in style. To add to the fun, a slideshow of Tillie’s life was presented on a large screen throughout the festivities. Tillie has 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Many of them attended the dinner, including Pamela Fillmore of Cottonwood Falls; Rebecca and John Nottingham and Emily of Ozawkie; Daniel Nottingham of Manhattan; Jim and Kris Srajer, Grant, and Cole of Tampa; Kristin and Jeff O’Hern of Gretna, Neb.; Mike and Kathy Bauer, Ryan, and Cassie of Omaha; and Dave and Susan Bauer, Will, and Andrew.

Other family members attending were nieces Loretta Crippen of Denver, Sharon Holliday and sons of Lincoln, Darlene Mathers of Great Bend, Vernie and Alice Hopkins and Kathy of Shawnee Mission, and Henry Sramek Jr. of Palaside, Neb. Family friends Lee and Kathy Borck of Manhattan also helped Tillie celebrate this annual milestone.

Lucille Kerbs met Mildred Steinle for dinner Nov. 9 at Olde Town in Hillsboro, which is operated by Mildred’s daughter, Brenda McGinness. Later, Lucille visited Lois Sklenar.

Sunflower Senior Citizens met Nov. 9 for a monthly potluck and business meeting. The group re-elected the 2010 officers for 2011. They are president, Jane Vajnar; vice president, Tom Duggan; secretary, Adeline Bernhardt; and treasurer, Dee Duggan. Others in attendance were Frank Patton, Mary Clemmer, Darlene Cramer, Leona Kleiber, Tillie Hein, Betty Mueller, and Shirley Zaideman. After the meeting, the group played card bingo. A Christmas dinner will be at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at the café with festivities following at the senior center.

Tom and Dee Duggan received news Nov. 9 of the death of Tom’s cousin, Jim Duggan of Niles.

The first community fun night of the winter was Nov. 7 and was well attended. The community Christmas party will be Dec. 5 with a parade a 6 p.m. followed by a visit by Santa and games and snacks at the senior center.

Kathrine Jeanne Rziha was baptized Nov. 7 at St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in Hope. A reception followed at the home of her parents, David and Catarina Rziha. Godparents are Susie Rziha and Gabriella Rozman. Others who attended were Karl and Maria Rozman, Marissa Rozman, and Alexandria O’Neil of Overland Park; John and Sue Kolhoff of Abilene; Jerry and Jeanne Rziha, Isabel and Samuel Rziha, and Tom and Dee Duggan.

Susie Rziha of Independence was a weekend guest of her parents, Jerry and Jeanne Rziha.

Tom and Dee Duggan took their granddaughter, Kaylee Hall of Herington, out for breakfast Nov. 7.

Leona Kleiber, Adeline Bernhardt, and Tom and Dee Duggan attended Betty Schlesener’s 80th birthday party Nov. 6 in Hope.

A farewell coffee was Nov. 4 for Eleanor Herbel at the café, since she and husband Willis moved to Hillsboro during the weekend. Leona Kleiber, Adeline Bernhardt, and Betty Mueller were hosts for the gathering. Eleanor received a gift from the group. Others in attendance were Lucille Kerbs, Kathy Davis, Edna Mueller, Mary Clemmer, Anna Mae Stika, Lois Sklenar, Jane Vajnar, Tillie Hein, Donna Backhus, Phyllis Mueller, Sue Yonda, and Catarina Rziha, Samuel, and Kathrine.

Adeline Bernhardt and Leona Kleiber attended the funeral of Sadie Bernhardt on Nov. 6 in Marion.

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League met Nov. 3 in the church basement. The Rev. Clark Davis led the lesson and Joyce Medley had devotions. Leona Kleiber was host. Others who attended were Cindy Bentz, Adeline Bernhardt, Becky Davis, Kathy Davis, and Betty Mueller. Officers for next year will be co-presidents, Kathy Davis and Cindy Bentz; secretary, Becky Davis; treasurer, Janet Bielefeld; and Christian growth, Joyce Medley.

Tom and Dee Duggan attended a meeting of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees on Nov. 4 in Herington. Richard Uhlig talked about staying healthy.

Glenn Kerbs of Dodge City was an overnight guest Nov. 2 of his mother, Lucille Kerbs.
