News is somewhat sparse this week, because most people sat in their homes next to their air conditioners. Everyone was happy to see the rain Tuesday night, which brought cooler temperatures. Rainfall amounts varied widely in this area with rain gauges showing anywhere from 1.90 inches to 4 inches. Several people had close calls with lightning strikes.

Deb Hall and Kaylee of Herington and Tom and Dee Duggan met Darla Hall and Adam of Lee’s Summit, Mo., in Topeka Saturday. They all attended the golden wedding celebration for Don and Betty Frick. After the open house, they joined family and friends at the Frick home. The Fricks also were hosts for a brunch on Sunday morning.

The Sunday evening meal sponsored by the Tampa Community Association and Prairie Pals was moved from the park to the senior center due to the extreme heat. Proceeds from the event will go for projected community improvements, beginning with playground equipment at the former high school site.

Bev and Tom Reid of rural Marion, Jennifer and Mike Jay and Cody of Hillsboro, Rodney Mueller, Paul and Edna Backhus, Brad Backhus and Jason Backhus attended the Kansas Water Well picnic at the country club Saturday at Marion. Rod and Jason played in the golf tournament.

Most people in the community attended the wedding of Dana Beltz and Simon Makovec at Pilsen Saturday with a dinner and dance at the community center in Herington.

Edna Mueller and Adeline Bernhardt enjoyed dinner out Friday in Salina.

Tom and Dee Duggan went to Blackwell, Okla., Thursday and met Darlene and Ernie Kite of Bartlesville, Okla., and Kaylee Hall. Kaylee, who had been spending a week with the Kites, returned home with her grandparents. En route home they visited Helen Costello at Mulvane, then went to Wichita where they were dinner guests of Janel Duggan. Other guests included Tim Duggan of Wichita, Ilene Becker of Albuquerque, N.M., Pat and Gene Westerhaus of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Mark, Beth, Tommy, and Joe Schafer of Phoenix, Ariz.
