Cougars defeat White City, 52-6

The Centre Cougars traveled to White City on Friday and got one step closer to hosting a first-round playoff game by defeating the Huskies, 52-6.

The Cougars chose to receive and started at their own 33-yard line. Tanner Brunner completed a pass to Zach Antoszyk for an 18- yard gain. On third down, Brunner ran 38 yards for a touchdown. Trevor Troutt ran for the two-point conversion.

On the Huskies’ first play, Cougar defender Casey Kristek penetrated through the Husky offensive line for a 10-yard sack. The Huskies went 3-and-out. Starting on the Huskies’ 13-yard line, Troutt made a 9-yard run, followed by a 4-yard run for a touchdown by Rustyn Kerbs.

White City ran two plays before Kerbs made an interception at the Cougars’ 31-yard line. On Centre’s fourth down, the Huskies stopped a Brunner run to take over on downs.

However, the Cougar defense stopped White City on fourth down. Kerbs caught a pass thrown by Brunner for a 45-yard touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion on a pass reception by Cole Svoboda.

White City completed a 24-yard pass before Kordell Harding sacked the quarterback for an 8-yard loss, forcing the Huskies to turn over the ball. Centre led at the end of the first quarter, 22-0.

The Cougars opened the second quarter with two passes to Antoszyk for another touchdown.

The Huskies started on their own 15-yard line. They were driven back to the 3-yard line before Brunner sacked the quarterback for a Cougar safety.

On Centre’s next possession, Brunner made some shifty moves to complete a 37-yard touchdown run.

The Huskies scored their only points on the kickoff. Codi Smith ran 70 yards for six points, making the score 38-6.

After a 3-and-out by the Cougars, White City tried to convert a fake punt on their own 20-yard line but failed. The Cougars then scored a touchdown.

White City gave up the ball after four downs, and the Cougars took over with five seconds remaining in the second quarter.

That was enough time for Brunner to make a 52-yard run for a touchdown. The two extra points by a Troutt reception gave Centre 46 points, ending the game at halftime.

The Cougars had 325 total yards with 23 carries for 229 yards rushing and four pass receptions for 96 yards. White City had 30 total yards, 2 yards rushing and 28 yards receiving.
