Council approves purchase of vacant nursing home

Staff writer

After a 30-minute tour of the former Golden Living Center facility Monday evening, Marion City Council approved the purchase of the facility.

The asking price by Golden Living Center is $100,000 — a special price, just for the city’s consideration.

The 23,711-square-foot, 72-bed-facility announced last month it would close its doors by Nov. 15, for business reasons. The last resident was moved and the building vacated more than a week ago.

One stipulation that had hindered another long-term care facility from occupying the space is a 25-year deed restriction placed by the owners of Golden Living Center on the three-acre property, keeping a skilled care nursing facility off the property.

The property at 1500 E. Lawrence, Marion, is in a prime location for elderly living or for use by USD 408.

According to city officials, if all goes as planned, the city will take what it wants from the building, including a year-old generator, and the building will be used as speculation property.

No other plans were divulged by officials.

Much property was left behind by the company — old-style hospital beds, linens, towels, recliners, office furniture, ice machine, commercial mixer, commercial dishwasher, commercial washer and dryer, and other commercial appliances.

Many decorative wall-hangings remained on the walls, and some personal property and donated items were left behind.

Owners of the property will be notified of the city’s intent, with final documents to be reviewed and approved at the next council meeting Dec. 1.
