County debates how much of shop to build

Staff writer

Marion County moved a step closer Monday to building a portion of a Peabody road and bridge station.

Cody Nelson with NF Construction provided various options.

He initially did not know what he would charge, so his presentation was delayed to allow time to return with his prices.

If commissioners decide to go with NF Construction to do the project, fees charged to provide proposals would be included in the overall cost, he said.

Nelson said that he preferred that the shell to be a post frame because of cost and how quickly the frame could be built.

“We can put up a 40- by 60- square-foot building and pour the concrete in two weeks,” he said.

Chairman Jonah Gehring proposed shaving down the building or shaving out pieces to get what is needed now.

Nelson was asked whether the county could just put a shell with a couple of concrete spaces and no electricity or other utilities.

“We need to do something, but how much do we need to do,” Gehring asked.

“I think there is something we could do that we can afford for now.”

The county could decide to finish proposed emergency medical services and finish the EMS side of the building later, Nelson said.

A slab of concrete and six doors on a dark shell would cost $50 to $65 a square foot, he said. The overall size of the building is 5,000

Commissioners were told waiting to build the whole building could end up being more expensive long term.

Building the shell with no power would cost between $300,000 to $400,000, depending on specifics and another $20,000 to $25,000 for an 18-inch building pipe, Nelson said.

Doing so would result in the construction of the shell and the doors. Nelson asked for side walls to be 12 to 14 feet high.

Electricity and plumbing might be necessary county administrator Tina Spencer said.

Gehring responded, and said portable toilets were pretty cheap.
