County reviews 30x30 proposal

County commissioners viewed a proposed anti-30x30 program resolution Monday and tentatively agreed to it but took no vote.

At next week’s meeting, they will decide whether to set times for public hearings on the proposal.

The proposed resolution:

  • Opposes the 30x30 program, including permanent preservation of 30% of the nation’s land and water by 2030.
  • Opposes the designation of Marion County land as part of the program.
  • Supports continued private and exclusive ownership of land.
  • Supports state laws governing water rights and use.
  • Opposes federal designation of water within the county that would impair or restrict water diversion and use authorized by Kansas law.
  • Maintains that any land acquired under the 30x30 program should be acquired only from willing landowners with compensation equal to fair market value.
  • Reserves the right to analyze and consider the impact of each conservation easement executed within its jurisdiction.

A copy would be sent to the U>S. Departments of the Interior and Agriculture, the Kansas Department of Agriculture, the Kansas Attorney General, and all other relevant federal and state agencies.
