County to observe Memorial Day

Burdick

Burdick area services will be at 9:30 a.m. at Diamond Springs Cemetery, 10:15 a.m. at Mission Valley Cemetery, 10:30 a.m. at Burdick United Methodist Church Cemetery, and 11 a.m. at Hebron Lutheran Cemetery.

There will be an honor guard, firing squad, and “Taps” at each cemetery. The UMC pastor will speak at Hebron.

Cedar Point, Florence

Services by John McKay American Legion Post will commence with an invocation and address by Father Darrin May of Holy Family Parish at 9:30 a.m. at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Florence Christian Church pastor John Branson will speak at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery, where flowers will be deposited by Terri Kent. The John McKay American Legion Post firing squad will salute the dead, and a sounding of “Taps” will be performed.

In Cedar Point, singer-songwriter Bennie Holtsclaw will provide an invocation and address at 10 a.m. at Cedar Point Community Church.

Goessel

Memorial services will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Goessel Mennonite Church Cemetery, 10 a.m. Monday at Tabor Mennonite Cemetery, and 11 a.m. Monday at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Cemetery.

Hillsboro

Memorial Day services will commence at 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park. The American Legion post will provide an honor guard.

The names of the 120 to 130 members who have died will be read.

Mayor Lou Thurston will speak, and special music will be provided.

Following the service, a steak meal with all the fixings will be served at Legion headquarters for a cost of $15.

Legion members will put up flags on Friday evening that will remain in place until Monday evening.

Lost Springs

Services arranged by Dollye Novak and Hallie Novak will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lost Springs Cemetery.

“It’s going to be very small,” Dollye said. “There will be a flag salute, music, ‘Taps,’ and everything pretty much like we do every year.”

Marion

Services will begin at 9:45 a.m. at Marion Cemetery. Rev. Carl Helm will be the speaker. Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will decorate the memorial in honor of the dead.

At 10 a.m., an honor guard will assemble at the Civil War monument, and American Legion post commander Richard Soyez will speak.

“I’m a simple man, but I believe it is important for us to honor our lost friends and family,” Soyez said.

The honor guard will present military honors in memory of departed comrades. A trumpet trio will play “Taps” following the third volley of the honor guard.

Marion Kiwanis Club will serve coffee and refreshments in Marion Elementary School multipurpose room after the service.

Volunteers are being asked to meet at 5 p.m. Friday at the cemetery to put out gravesite flags, at 7 p.m. Sunday to erect the Avenue of Flags, and at 4 p.m. Memorial Day to remove flags.

Peabody

Memorial Day services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.

Peabody Boy Scouts will provide a color guard, and members of Peabody-Burns High School band will perform patriotic music. Veterans from the American Legion post will provide an honor guard.

Peabody Christian Church pastor Jim Pohlman will speak.

High school sophomores will provide a meal in the Brown gym at the high school beginning at 11 a.m. Alumni, community members, family and friends are invited to participate.

Pilsen

Services will start at 9:30 a.m. at Pilsen Cemetery, with military honors by Gilbert-Poppe Post of the American Legion, Lincolnville. It will include a welcome, address, and a reading of veterans’ honor roll by William E. Benda.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and wreath placement by Deanna Klenda, the honor guard will give a rifle salute.

Mary Griffith will sing “Taps” with trumpet accompaniment by Adam Makovec.

Services will be in Pilsen Community Center in case of inclement weather.

Ramona

Services at Lewis Cemetery west of Ramona will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday with flags placed by the Moffitt-Crandall Post of Tampa. Cemetery caretakers will mark the graves of veterans.

Major Jose H. Espinoza will be the guest speaker. Terry Deines and Jean Brunner will provide special music.

After the service, complimentary fried chicken, bread, and drinks will be served at noon at Ramona City Park. Patrons are being asked to bring a covered dish and table service. Donations will be accepted.
