Couple to leave family for Iraq

Staff writer

Josh and Brianna Moffet know the dangers of serving with the Army in Iraq.

Josh will begin his third tour of duty and Brianna will begin her second tour on Sept. 23, when they will leave their Lincolnville home for training in Indiana.

But this time around danger is not what worries them most — this time, they will be leaving three young daughters in the states.

“Only one of them understands,” Brianna said. “Our 3-year-old understands that we’re leaving. Our 5-year-old understands how long a year will be. Hopefully, our 1-year-old will remember us when we come back.”

The three girls will live with Brianna’s aunt in Louisiana for a year while their parents are in Iraq.

Josh and Brianna met during their first tour in 2005 when they were stationed in Kuwait. She was the driver of their Humvee and Josh was the gunner.

After completely their tour of duty, Brianna followed Josh to his home in Lincolnville. They were soon married and had three girls: Madison, 5; Cadence, 3; and Kylie, 1.

American Legion riders from Marion, Hillsboro, Champman, and Mulvance gave the family a send-off Sunday.

Although Josh served his second tour in Iraq in 2007, Brianna was able to stay home and take care of the family.

Unlike their first tour, the Moffets, at least initially, will be split up. Josh will continue working as a gunner and expects to be on patrols around Baghdad. Brianna will be stationed in Kuwait and drive large trucks.

They will not see each other until their two-week leave.

“The last time I was over there we were still getting hit by roadside bombs,” Josh said. “I don’t really want to go back.”
