Couple wins Vegas trip

Darla Spencer of Florence was in her car a few weeks ago, listening to the radio when the announcer said listeners had a chance to win something. She wasn’t quite sure what the prize was but decided to call.

Miraculously, Darla was able to get through, was the 10th caller, and “won” an opportunity to be chosen for a grand prize — a trip for two to Las Vegas for the annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

On Friday, she received a phone call from the radio station, Kissin’ Country KZSN 102.1, Wichita.

Her name was drawn out of the hopper and she won!

She and her husband, Eddie, will fly to Las Vegas April 4 and attend the music awards show plus other events.

Among the perks of the prize are tickets to the ACM Post-Award All-Star Jam, an ACM “Artist of the Decade” show, honoring George Strait, which will be taped to be aired in a future broadcast, a Fremont Street Concert in downtown Las Vegas, and a private event with special guests.

On top of that, the Spencers will get to “hang out” on the red carpet before the awards show with Wichita radio station personality Cody Carlson, as she does a live broadcast.

They’ll return home April 7.

The radio station is footing the bill for everything — plane tickets, hotel room, and tickets to all of the events.

“This is so exciting,” Darla said. “I just can’t believe that we’re doing this.”

While in Las Vegas, the couple will stay at the MGM Grand, a popular hotel on the famous Vegas Strip.

“We’re just a couple of Kansas hillbillies,” Darla said with a laugh. “We’ve never been anywhere. We’ve never even been on an airplane.”

The Spencers now are thinking about what they’re going to wear to the events and looking forward to a short break from Kansas weather.

“Our 27th wedding anniversary is Tuesday,” Darla said. “This is a great anniversary present.”
