Cowboy poet to perform at Peabody library

A mix of humor, storytelling, and Western tradition will take center stage April 18 as cowboy poet Ron Wilson performs on the lawn of Peabody Township Library.

The free program, presented by Sunflower Theatre and the Peabody Township Library, will begin at 7 p.m. on the library’s front lawn at 214 N. Walnut St.

In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the library’s Ann Potter Room.

Attendees are being encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics or to visit local eateries before the performance.

Wilson, of the historic Lazy T Ranch near Manhattan, is known for his original, family-friendly poetry rooted in ranch life and Western heritage. His work blends humor and storytelling, often with a patriotic tone.

Wilson was dubbed “Poet Lariat” by former Governor Bill Graves and has performed at a governor’s inauguration.

He presides over the annual Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest and is host for “Cattle Trails Showcase,” a monthly online program highlighting Western performers. He also appears regularly in online video segments from his ranch.

Wilson has been recognized nationally as a spokesman for the National Day of the Cowboy organization and as an ambassador for the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

The event is designed to offer a relaxed, community-centered evening highlighting a uniquely Kansas art form.
