A squad car, damaged when Deputy Derek Calvert struck a deer, is being pulled from use early, but that won’t leave the sheriff’s office short on cars.
Sheriff Robert Craft told county commissioners Monday that the cost of repairing the damage to the headlamp, fender and quarter panel was not worth doing for a car already scheduled to be taken out of commission in two weeks.
According to undersheriff David Huntley, a replacement car has already arrived as per regular car replacement schedule. In the meantime, the office has a car used for lake patrol that can be utilized when a car in the fleet is out of commission.
Decals were being applied to the new squad car, Huntley said.
County commissioners agreed with Craft’s assessment and gave permission to withdraw the car from use early.
In other business, commissioners:
- Heard an update on the status of upcoming work on 190th Rd. Dondlinger Construction, Wichita, awarded the bid for the repair contract, is in the process of obtaining insurance and bonding certificates as required for the project;
- Voted to get bids for trimming or removal of black locust and cottonwood trees at Marion County Park and Lake; and
- Heard a routine update and held an executive session for personnel matters with road and bridge superintendent Jesse Hamm.
