Deadline set for street work

Staff writer

Lincoln St. reconstruction could be finished before school begins in August even though Hillsboro council members Tuesday gave a contractor until Sept. 11 to complete the job.

Engineer Darin Neufeld told council members the contractor planned to pour the street in one day next week and then move to curbs, driveways, and sidewalks.

The project has been delayed, but Neufeld said the contractor’s goal is to be “100% cleaned up, done, and gone before school starts.”

Councilman Ronald Wilkins, who lives along the project, said notices given to residents had not kept up with what workers actually were doing.

Neufeld said updated notices would be delivered.

Council members also approved keeping former interim city administrator Michael Webb as a consultant while Danielle Bartel takes over as city administrator.

Webb will help with the 2027 budget, a fire station project, and other work as needed. He may work up to 20 hours a week at $125 an hour, plus travel costs.

Bartel said Webb already was working remotely on the budget and would come to Hillsboro when needed.

The council also accepted councilmember Blake Beye’s resignation. Beye is getting married July 18 and moving to Canton, making him ineligible to represent his Hillsboro ward.

Beye had served since 2022.

Council also accepted a $25,000 grant for pickleball courts at the sports complex, scheduled a Sept. 1 hearing on next year’s property tax rate, and set a Sept. 1 hearing on code violations at a vacant house at 314 N. Jefferson St.
