Disaster property tax relief possible

Staff writer

Property owners whose homes were damaged by recent flooding might be given partial relief from property taxes if they qualify and the county commission approves.

County appraiser Lisa Reeder outlined rules for the program for county commissioners Monday.

Only damage to the residence is included, not damage to outbuildings or personal property, Reeder said.

“They will have to get an estimate from their insurance company or a contractor,” Reeder said. “That amount has to be in excess of 50% of the county’s appraised value of the house.”

Reeder said single-family dwellings, multifamily dwellings, and mobile homes all qualify for relief if the value of the damage meets program guidelines.

People can pick up an application at the appraiser’s office, the county treasurer’s office, the county clerk’s office, or the register of deeds office, Reeder said.

The appraiser’s office will give commissioners the certified assessment value for 2019.

If commissioners approve the applicant for property tax relief, commissioners set the percentage of property tax that will be forgiven.

The appraiser’s office has more information on the program at (620) 382-3715.
