Distance runners take first at league track meet

Both the Marion High School boys and girls track teams placed third May 13 at the Heart of America league track meet in Newton. The female Warriors outscored the boys team, 73-68, for the first time this season.

Kaeylyn Thierolf led the way with a first-place finish in the 3200-meter run, with a time of 12 minutes, 19.8 seconds, and a second-place finish in the 1600, 5:39.8. Both marks were new personal bests for the freshman distance runner.

“She ran away from the crowd in the 3200 and looks very strong for next week,” coach Grant Thierolf said.

Whitney Gordon and Corey Shields each added a pair of second-place finishes. Shields was the runner-up in the shot put at 33 feet, 4 inches, and discus, 91-11. Gordon placed second in the high jump, 4-10, and 100-meter hurdles, 16.69. Gordon also placed fourth with Sarah Eurit, Katey Ehrlich, and Alicia Maloney in the 4x100 relay, 55.15.

“Whitney ran a very nice 100 hurdle race for us and is getting better in that event every week,” coach Thierolf said.

Ehrlich also placed second in the 300 hurdles, 52.04, and sixth in the 100 hurdles, 18.27.

“Katey had a good day,” coach Thierolf said. “Placing or making the finals in three events is pretty tough for a freshman.”

The boys team was led by Jordan Hett who won the 3200, 10:27.2, and placed third in the 1600, 4:52.7.

Connor Thierolf placed in all three throwing events — second in the javelin, 158-1; third in the shot put, 43-10.5; and sixth in the discus, 115-9.

“Placing all three throws is pretty difficult due to the fact that you are throwing each at the same time and just go back and forth between all three,” coach Grant Thierolf said.

Colten Johnson and Mikael Antoszyk also placed in multiple events. Johnson placed third in the javelin, 146-10; fourth in the pole vault, 11-6; and fifth in the 110 hurdles, 16-7

Antoszyk also placed third in the long jump, 19-5.75, and sixth in the triple jump, 39-2.

“He has struggled with his step the past few weeks and finally got on today and did a great job for us,” coach Thierolf said of Antoszyk.
