LETTERS:   Distressed driver gets a helping hand

To the editor:

Recently, my wife and I were driving from Wichita to Manhattan, Kansas. We had just passed the road construction on highway 50 when a rear tire on our minivan blew-out. We pulled over to the side of the road where we began to change the tire.

Off duty Marion County Sheriff Deputy Larry Starkey and his wife were on their way to Wichita. They stopped, Larry identified himself to us and proceeded to help change our tire — in fact he did the brunt of the work. It would have taken us much longer to complete the task had Mr. and Mrs. Starkey had not stopped to help us.

We appreciate their help tremendously. Your communities are fortunate to have such kind and helpful people living there.
