Drawing a line
on redistricting

So, Kansas Republicans and Democrats have decided to get into the same you-know-whatting match as Texas, California, and others.

It’s a sad day for democracy when anyone supports any political movement because it seeks to gerrymander more effectively than its opposition.

We in Marion County have had enough of it. For Congress, we used to be in the 4th District, and even bragged about having elected two Marion residents as congressmen for that district.

Then we got shoved into the 1st District and, most recently, were gerrymandered into the 2nd District as a partial offset for diluting votes from Douglas County, which replaced us in the 1st.

We’re tired of being eastern Ukraine and the Gaza Strip in warfare started by greedy politicians in other parts of the state.

If we really want to address redistricting, the county should re-examine its county commissioner districts, which never were adjusted after the 2020 census and which attach an isolated chunk of Marion to a non-contiguous area a minimum of six miles away from it.

Marion, like Marion County, is split up like some partitioned battleground when it comes to commissioner and legislative districts. If we really want to look at reapportionment, let’s address actual problems, not look for political advantages.
