A 90-year-old Marion woman was in fair condition Tuesday at a Wichita hospital after crashing into a semi while she was attempting to make a U-turn across US-56 on Remington Rd.

Ruth Kramer was traveling north Monday on Remington Rd. when she drove her 2013 Ford Focus into the intersection.

She struck a westbound 2021 Volvo semi driven by Robert Smith, 49, Salina, undersheriff Dave Huntley said. The semi belonged to Great Plains Trucking, Inc.

Two Marion police officers and three sheriff’s deputies responded, along with four Marion firefighters and paramedics.

Emergency medical services director Travis Parmley said first responders were able to get Kramer out of the car without using hydraulic rescue tools.

However, emergency workers suspected Kramer had internal injuries. She was taken to Via Christi - St. Francis Hospital, in Wichita.

“She was alert and oriented for the most part,” Parmley said.

Smith refused medical evaluation at the scene, he said.

Two small dogs she was traveling with were taken to Animal Health Center by a deputy.

Marion firefighters spent 45 minutes to an hour helping the sheriff’s department clear debris.

Firefighters cleaned up one or two gallons of fuel that leaked from the semi’s diesel engines, fire chief Preston Williams said.

“The sheriff’s department was concerned with getting the highway back up and traffic flowing,” he said.

Huntley said Kramer “more than likely” would be cited for making an improper U-turn.
