Marion County Sheriff and Peabody Fire Department were the first on the scene of a rollover accident Friday north of the Harvey/Marion County line.
Christina Axtman, 28, of Assaria was northbound on Indigo Road when, for reasons unknown by investigating Harvey County Chief Deputy Mark Hardtarfer, she veered her 2010 Ford Focus off the right side of the road and hit a culvert, launching the vehicle.
The car flipped multiple times before landing on its roof in a cornfield east of the road. Axtman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle during one of the rollovers. Her two children a female, 5, and male, 3, were in the vehicle but securely fastened in child seats.
According to Marion County Undersheriff Dave Huntley, the girl sustained a minor injury to one of her legs and the boy was uninjured. They were able to crawl from the vehicle before emergency responders arrived. The two children were transported to Hillsboro Community Hospital as a precautionary measure.
Axtman sustained serious injuries, including multiple spinal fractures, Hardtarfer said. She was airlifted from the scene to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
The Harvey County Sheriff’s office is conducting the investigation because the accident began in Harvey County.
