Dust Bowl on display

Photographs show strife of 1930s weather

A state-sponsored exhibit will be on display during the annual Florence Labor Day Celebration.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 1, “Dust Bowl in Kansas” can be viewed at the Florence Ambulance Building.

“Dust Bowl” was the name given to that part of the Southern Plains where the effects of drought and blowing dust were most extreme. “Black blizzards” first struck in 1932 and returned each year throughout the 1930s.

Produced by the Kansas State Historical Society the exhibit explores those difficult years through historic photographs and text, and is part of the Kansas Interpretive Traveling Exhibit Service.

Admission to the exhibit is free but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
