Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

march 6

12:09 a.m. — A patient at Hillsboro Community Hospital was taken to Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:55 a.m. — A fire at the Marion burn dump was extinguished by Marion firefighters. A city loader was used to cover the affected area with dirt to prevent additional flare-ups.

9:50 a.m. — A reported smoldering brush pile on Xavier Rd. between 180th and 190th was discovered to be a smoldering stump in a ditch. It was extinguished by Marion firefighters.

10:20 a.m. — Sparks from an electric transformer apparently ignited a grass fire behind St. Mark’s Activity Center in the 400 block of N. Cedar St. Marion firefighters extinguished the blaze before it spread to nearby structures.

12:27 p.m. — A man complaining of weakness and high blood pressure in the 100 block of S. Nickerson St. in Burns who was reportedly wanting to be taken to Newton refused transportation after being checked by Peabody ambulance personnel. A Burns first responder assisted.

1:13 p.m. — A Goessel firefighter reported smoke and fire in a field on 120th Rd. one-quarter of a mile west of Goessel. Firefighters reported the fire was extinguished at 1:37 p.m.

1:18 p.m. — Peabody firefighters responded to 120th Rd. west of Remington Rd. for a burning brush pile that rekindled from a burn the previous week. Firefighters were clear of the scene by 2 p.m.

3:49 p.m. — A woman in her 60s with chest pains was taken from the 600 block of E. Marion St. in Goessel to Newton Medical Center by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder assisted.

5:23 p.m. — A patient at HCH was taken to Kansas Heart Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:41 p.m. — A person with low blood pressure was taken from Parkside Homes to Newton Medical Center by Marion ambulance.

1:08 a.m. — A man with a problem involving a catheter was taken from the 2100 block of Schlotthauer Dr. at Eastshore to St. Luke Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:30 a.m. — A man in his 90s with a possible stroke was taken from Bison Rd. between 320th and 330th Rds. to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Tampa ambulance.

7:28 a.m. — A woman in her 70s who was having a reaction to medication was taken from a residence on US-56 between Bison and Chisholm Trail Rds. to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:44 a.m. — A man with intermittent chest pains was taken from the 100 block of S. Olive St. in Peabody to Newton Medical Center by Marion ambulance. A Peabody first responder and EMS director Ed Debesis also responded.

1:41 p.m. — Burns firefighters were paged for a suspected fire in the area of US-77 and 50th Rd., reported by someone who saw smoke from their residence north of that area. Burns asked for a Florence brush truck to respond until they could get someone there. A firefighter arriving at the location at 2 p.m. reported he did not see any signs of a fire. The call was canceled at 2:03 p.m. and all units returned to their stations.

6:29 p.m. — A father of teen-age female with a reported history of self-harm called dispatchers from out of state to report that she had possibly cut herself. Hillsboro ambulance, EMS director Ed Debesis, Hillsboro police, and sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Indigo Rd. between 150th and 160th Rds., where medical units stayed until officers cleared them to enter the house. The teen-ager was taken to HCH.

7:15 p.m. — A semi truck driver with a cut on his leg refused to be taken to a hospital after being checked by Marion ambulance at the KDOT lot at US-56 and Cedar St.

7:18 p.m. — Peabody police and ambulance responded to the 500 block of N. Elm St. for a woman believed to be going through methamphetamine withdrawal who was threatening violence, including a threat to “tase” people. Ambulance personnel staged back until 7:26 p.m. when an officer cleared them to continue to the scene. The woman refused transportation to a hospital.

11:49 p.m. — A person with breathing difficulties was taken from the 500 block of W. Grand St. to Newton Medical Center by Hillsboro ambulance.

thursday

12:28 a.m. — A woman with labor pains in the 300 block of S. Lincoln St. was assessed by Marion ambulance personnel. She was not transported to a hospital.

2:37 p.m. — A controlled burn that was out of control in a pasture on 100th Rd. between Holly and Indigo Rds. prompted a response by Peabody firefighters, who battled the blaze for four hours with assistance from Walton firefighters.

2:48 p.m. — Burns firefighters responded to a fire at an unspecified location in Butler County.

5:59 p.m. — A patient at St. Luke was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita by Marion ambulance.

friday

2:24 p.m. — Burns firefighters responded to a grass fire at NE 140th and Bluestem Rds. in Butler County.

7:44 p.m. — A sheriff’s deputy requested Peabody ambulance respond to a residence on Old Mill Rd. between 50th and 60th Rds. to examine a subject being questioned by officers. Ambulance personnel reported they were not transporting anyone and left the scene. Subsequently, a sheriff’s deputy transported the individual to St. Luke.

saturday

11:41 a.m. — A waterway grass fire started by a vehicle on 240th Rd. between K-15 and Goldenrod Rd. was quickly extinguished by Hillsboro firefighters.

1:18 p.m. — A male in his 20s who was having a panic attack at Carlsons’ Grocery was examined by Marion ambulance personnel, but refused transportation to a hospital.

1:22 p.m. — A patient at HCH was taken to Via Christi – St. Francis in Wichita by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:48 p.m. — Goessel firefighters responded to a controlled burn that was out of control on 130th Rd. between K-15 and Chisholm Trail Rd. The fire was reported contained at 5:34 p.m., but flare-ups and hot spots kept firefighters busy until all trucks were back at the station at 8:50 p.m.

5:17 p.m. — Peabody ambulance and police responded to the 200 block of Pine St. for an unresponsive male who was reportedly cold to the touch. A coroner was requested at 5:26 p.m.

6:47 p.m. — A patient at St. Luke was taken to Wesley Medical Center by Marion ambulance.

7:14 p.m. — A man in his 90s with influenza whose vital signs were dropping was taken from Salem Home to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:30 p.m. — A woman with irregular blood sugar levels in the 400 block of N. Walnut St. was examined by Marion ambulance personnel, but refused to be transported to a hospital.

sunday

1:18 a.m. — A woman in her 70s with breathing difficulties at Westview Manor was taken to Newton Medical Center by Peabody ambulance.

8:31 a.m. — A woman involved in a one-vehicle accident about a mile west of Florence on US-50 was examined by Florence ambulance personnel. The woman reported no injuries and was not taken to a hospital.

10:41 a.m. — A Durham firefighter asked dispatchers to send Tampa firefighters to a tractor and grass fire at 330th and Diamond Rds. The Durham firefighter indicated Roxbury fire department had been paged. The dispatcher advised they had been contacted by McPherson County within the prior 15 minutes and were told no assistance was needed. The Durham firefighter reported the fire was burning in the south ditch toward a field, and the dispatcher then paged Durham fire, noting that no request for outside assistance had been received. No additional firefighters responded. At 10:48 a.m., a McPherson dispatcher radioed that they had been in contact with Roxbury fire and assistance was requested. The Marion dispatcher then paged Tampa fire. A Durham firefighter then radioed that they were responding, saying that they relied on “active 911” for their page-outs. Tampa fire reported having firefighters at the station, and a Durham firefighter indicated they should go ahead and respond. A Tampa brush truck arrived at 11:01 a.m. and reported Roxbury firefighters had “pretty well got it mopped up.” An attempt to give directions to an arriving Durham unit was unsuccessful, with one firefighter reporting that firefighters in the unit did not take a radio with them. Three Durham units arrived at the scene, but all county units were dismissed by 11:23 a.m.

At 1:31 p.m., a Durham firefighter contacted dispatchers asking if Tampa fire had been paged out earlier on a vehicle fire. “I was just getting it on my active 911 now, so I was just curious, thank you,” the firefighter said.

5:34 p.m. — Peabody firefighters were paged for an alarm going off at Peabody Health and Rehab. The call was terminated after a dispatcher made contact with the facility and reported being told an employee mistakenly pulled a fire alarm thinking it would shut off a door alarm.

monday

4 p.m. — A patient at St. Luke was taken to Newton Medical Center by Marion ambulance.

6:09 p.m. — A grass fire at 220th and Bison Rds. was extinguished in about 45 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

10:12 p.m. — A grass fire at 10th and Quail Creek Rds. was extinguished by Peabody firefighters within about 20 minutes after arriving at the scene.
