Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MAY 28

1:43 a.m. — A smoky fire that reportedly started in a commercial dryer and spread into the walls of a farmhouse on 210th Rd. between Diamond and Eagle Rds. was quickly extinguished by Hillsboro and Lehigh firefighters. Firefighters and water tankers from Durham, Goessel, and Marion also responded in case they were needed as did Hillsboro ambulance.

2:13 p.m. — A fire alarm at Peabody Health and Rehab was quickly determined to be false by a Peabody firefighter on the scene.

2:25 p.m. — A full complement of Peabody firefighters responded to an alarm minutes later at Westview Manor, but it was determined to be merely a short in the alarm system.

2:58 p.m. — A Peabody firefighter contacted Westview after its alarm sounded again.

7:23 p.m. — Burns and later Peabody firefighters were deployed as weather watchers. Peabody police asked Peabody firefighters to unlock the Christian Church for potential use as a shelter. Firefighters said they no longer had a key but contacted the church pastor.

8:16 p.m. — Marion firefighters responded to reports of smoke, initially in the 400 block of S. Cedar St., then in the 400 block of N. Cedar St., and finally in the 300 block of N. Roosevelt St. The smoke was coming from a small, backyard fire pit and posed no danger.

8:56 p.m. — Marion ambulance transferred a patient from St. Luke Hospital to Newton Medical Center.

MAY 29

9:27 a.m. — A fire alarm at a residence in the 100 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro proved to be a malfunctioning oven. Hillsboro firefighters ventilated the residence.

10:18 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

6 p.m. — A pedestrian hit by a car on K-150 near Zebulon Rd. was taken to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped direct traffic for more than an hour.

7:06 p.m. — A woman who fell in the 300 block of N. Ash St. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance even though EMTs rated her condition as potentially life-threatening.

7:44 p.m. — A lethargic 84-year-old man in the 200 block of S. Ash St. was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:46 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters helped right an elderly person’s motorized scooter that tipped over near a pond adjacent to Hillsboro’s golf course.

THURSDAY

5:01 a.m. — A woman who fell at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:12 a.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:39 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

FRIDAY

9:06 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to St. Francis by Marion ambulance.

11:52 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

2:30 p.m. — A woman who fell out of her motorized wheelchair in front of St. Luke Living Center declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

7:49 p.m. — An elderly man who possibly broke his leg in the 600 block of W. 5th St. in Peabody was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance.

SATURDAY

5:32 p.m. — A nurse discovered a person dead near a pond adjacent to Hillsboro’s golf course. Hillsboro police, a sheriff’s deputy, Hillsboro ambulance, and a coroner were dispatched. Jost Funeral Home transported the body.

10:18 p.m. – Tampa ambulance briefly was asked to stand by near 290th and Old Mill Rds. after law enforcement officers were told a couple’s adult son, possibly coming down from a drug high, had become combative. The call was canceled five minutes later after an officer arrived on the scene, discovered there was a warrant for the son’s arrest, and took him into custody.

10:39 p.m. — Tampa ambulance again was asked to stand by, this time in the 100 block of B St. in Ramona, after a caller told dispatchers a man was hitting a woman and she was screaming for help. Unable to verify the report, a deputy canceled the call for the ambulance.

11:15 p.m. — Shortly after unexplained screaming was heard from fire department radio registered to a Hillsboro firefighter, public safety officers dealt with a third report of a domestic disturbance.

Dispatchers received a telephoned report of a father and an adult son exchanging blows and firing shots at each other. In response, deputies and a Marion officer, who had started toward Ramona on the previous call, were dispatched, and Marion ambulance was asked to stand by at Pawnee and 220th Rds. Officers from Hillsboro and the sheriff’s reservoir patrol joined them.

Police had begun hunting for the son, who allegedly had driven west toward Hillsboro with a 9mm handgun, when a voice transmitted from the Hillsboro firefighter’s radio plaintively requested an ambulance and reported that there had been a domestic battery.

A deputy informed dispatchers not to respond to the messages, then switched his radio to the fire talk group and communicated directly with the caller, who said he was unarmed and with his fiance in a truck at 230th and Old Mill Rds., half a mile west of where the incident had occurred.

The officer instructed him and his fiancé to emerge, put their hands up, and step away from the pickup, and the ambulance was summoned to check the person, who declined to be taken to a hospital. He was, however, taken to jail on suspicion of domestic battery.

SUNDAY

9:44 a.m. — A 93-year-old woman who fell in the 800 block of Barker St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Florence ambulance.

10:24 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman who fell at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

MONDAY

7:27 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:20 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.
