Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
7:15 a.m. — A patient was transferred from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.
1:56 p.m. — A 2-year-old having a seizure in the 200 block of W. 4th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance. Florence ambulance also responded to the call.
3:00 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.
5:11 p.m. — Still en route back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was instructed to transfer another HCH patient to St. Francis. The ambulance did not return to its station until 8:09 p.m.
10:10 p.m. — A third HCH patient was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.
3:28 p.m. — A woman who suffered a possible head injury in a one-vehicle accident near 20th and Mustang Rds. was taken to Newton Medical Center by Peabody ambulance. The county emergency medical director also responded to the call.
9:04 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters supervised a controlled burn in the 400 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro.
11:43 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.
6:45 p.m. — A 93-year-old woman who fell at Sunrise Townhomes in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
6:49 p.m. — With Marion ambulance on a call just a block away, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to check a reportedly uninjured 70-year-old man who fell near mailboxes at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion. He was not taken to a hospital.
7:16 p.m. — Before returning to its station, Hillsboro ambulance was diverted to HCH to transfer a patient to Newton Med.
9:11 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance not yet back from Newton, Peabody ambulance was assigned to transfer another HCH patient to Newton Med. However, the ambulance director reassigned the call to Hillsboro ambulance upon its return. Hillsboro ambulance finally returned to its station at 10:51 p.m.
12:44 a.m. — A 59-year-old man with convulsions and high blood sugar at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance. Marion ambulance initially responded to the call as well.
12:52 a.m. — With Peabody ambulance still on a previous call, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to check on a 69-year-old woman who had fallen at Indian Guide Terrace Apartments in Peabody. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
8:48 a.m. — A clammy and sweaty 74-year-old man with a history of stroke was taken from the 500 block of S. Ash St. to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
11:27 a.m. — A woman in her 70s who fell and hit her head while getting mail at a Lakeshore Dr. residence at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
12:01 p.m. — A 92-year-old man who passed out at Hillsboro Senior Center was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. The emergency medical director and, briefly, Marion ambulance also responded.
12:59 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Wesley by Marion ambulance.
2:33 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still in Wichita, Peabody ambulance transferred a St. Luke patient to Newton Med.
3:08 a.m. — With Marion ambulance still not back, a possibly overheated or emotionally disturbed pedestrian sitting on a bench outside Marion Auto Supply was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. EMTs initially did not respond to repeated pages. The emergency medical director was first on the scene. Hillsboro ambulance finally responded after Marion ambulance attendants, still en route back from Wichita, telephoned Hillsboro EMTs.
9:45 p.m. — A Westview Manor patient was transferred to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance.
10:07 p.m. — With Peabody ambulance en route to Newton, Marion ambulance was sent from Chingawassa Days to Peabody to transport an ill 86-year-old man to Newton Med from the 500 block of Norwood Rd.
10:17 p.m. — With both Marion and Peabody ambulances tied up, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to the 100 block of N. Roosevelt in Marion for an 86-year-old man who pulled his catheter out and was bleeding. At St. Luke’s request, the ambulance transported him directly to Newton Med.
9:18 a.m. — A 43-year-old Peabody Health and Rehab staff member with chest pains and shortness of breath was taken to St. Francis by the crew of Marion ambulance aboard Peabody ambulance, which had responded with a single EMT as a first-response unit. The ambulance was diverted to St. Francis after originally heading for Newton Med.
12:19 p.m. — A 58-year-old pickup truck driver seriously injured in a head-on collision with a semi-trailer truck on US-56 near Kanza Rd. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance and immediately transferred by helicopter to a Wichita hospital.
Helicopter availability often is checked as a matter of routine in highway accidents, but EMTs on the scene had to specifically request a check for this accident.
The semi driver, apparently less seriously injured, also was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.
Hillsboro firefighters and the county emergency medical director also responded to the accident.
6:45 p.m. — A 17-year-old girl injured in a rollover accident at 220th and Diamond Rds. was checked by Hillsboro ambulance but declined to be taken to a hospital.
10:45 p.m. — Florence firefighters stood by as a precaution until gas company workers could deal with a gas leak in the 800 block of N. Main St. in Florence. The county emergency manager also responded.
Initial confusion about the location of the leak was attributed to dispatchers accidentally sending text messages to emergency workers stating that the leak was in Herington instead of Florence.
1:16 a.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance.
1:36 p.m. — An 89-year-old Salem Home resident with insulin issues was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
7:46 a.m. — An 84-year-old man feeling ill in the 500 block of Norwood St. in Peabody was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance. Peabody firefighters initially were called to help lift, but the request was canceled.
