Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

OCT. 6

9:16 a.m. — A malfunctioning water flow switch that set off two fire alarms at Salem Home in Hillsboro was reset by Hillsboro firefighters.

1:55 p.m. — A person who had fallen at a residence in the 200 block of W. B St. in Hillsboro asked for help getting up but declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:26 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters needed about an hour to extinguish a fire in a soybean field near 150th and Limestone Rd.

4:24 p.m. — A 18-year-old woman who suffered arm and neck injuries in a one-vehicle traffic accident half a mile south of 180th Rd. on US-77 was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance. Marion rescue squad and firefighters were called but remained at the scene only a short time.

5:14 p.m. — A combine fire at 360th and Mustang Rds. was extinguished by Ramona and Tampa firefighters.

7:44 p.m. — A 96-year-old man who was feeling weak and slurring his words was checked by a Durham first responder and Tampa ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital from a farmhouse near 300th and Goldenrod Rds.

10:02 p.m. — Even before Tampa ambulance arrived at his residence in the 500 block of Lombard St. in Lincolnville, a 79-year-old man who had complained of abdomen pain declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, which arrived first. Lincolnville first responders also were called but did not answer.

OCT. 7

12:33 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman, bleeding from her throat and having difficulty breathing, was taken to St. Luke from the 200 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion by Marion ambulance.

1:47 a.m. — What appeared to be the same patient, although this time identified as a man, was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Newton Medical Center.

2:40 a.m. — An 84-year-old man was transferred from Salem Home to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:29 a.m. — A confused motorist who complained of a wrist injury after a vehicle and grass fire at 350th Rd. and US-77 was taken to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Tampa ambulance.

Lost Springs firefighters and a first responder from Lincolnville arrived before the ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded. Marion ambulance, en route back from Newton, also briefly headed toward the accident.

The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes.

1:58 p.m. — A possibly dehydrated 68-year-old man who had fallen earlier in the day was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from near 220th and Upland Rds.

3:09 p.m. — A confused 77-year-old woman, recently diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, was checked by Hillsboro ambulance at a residence in the 200 block of S. Madison St. in Hillsboro. She declined to be taken to a hospital and instead went by private vehicle.

3:21 p.m. — A combine fire near 150th and Kanza Rds. was extinguished before Hillsboro firefighters arrived.

4:03 p.m. — A clammy 28-year-old man experiencing cold sweats at Marion Reservoir’s Hillsboro Cove was taken to Newton Medical Center after Marion ambulance determined him to have a life-threatening condition.

THURSDAY

12:03 a.m. — Two people involved in a reported fight at Country Inn motel in Marion were checked by Marion ambulance attendants and taken to jail by a sheriff’s deputy and a Marion police officer.

1:35 p.m. — A 65-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

3:47 p.m. — A ditch fire on US-77 near 230th Rd. was extinguished by Marion firefighters, who spent less than an hour at the scene.

4:20 p.m. — A woman who fell outdoors in the 200 block of E. 5th St. in Florence and hurt her back was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

5:13 p.m. — A combine and field fire near 310th and Quail Creek Rds. was extinguished by Tampa and Ramona firefighters, who remained on the scene for nearly two hours.

5:14 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Wesley by Marion ambulance.

FRIDAY

3:05 a.m. — An 86-year-old woman who was having trouble breathing in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

10 a.m. — Tampa firefighters returned to 310th and Quail Creek Rds. to tend to a bin of soybeans that had rekindled. They remained there for nearly an hour and a half.

10:48 a.m. — A 93-year-old woman who briefly lost consciousness at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance. An additional attendant from Marion accompanied the Peabody crew to Newton.

12:56 p.m. — Marion firefighters helped briefly evacuate portions of the Hilltop Manor apartment complex after a gas leak was detected by Atmos Energy.

1:42 p.m. — A driver injured in an accident involving a car and a mower at 260th and Kanza Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

Durham firefighters also were dispatched. Because dispatchers did not hear Durham’s acknowledgment of a page, Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched as well but then were told to disregard the call.

5:04 p.m. — A combine fire along 190th Rd. between Falcon and Goldenrod Rds. was extinguished before Hillsboro firefighters arrived.

10:03 p.m. — A 96-year-old man who fell near 310th and Goldenrod Rds. and couldn’t get up was assisted by a first responder from Durham and by Tampa ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

SATURDAY

12:19 a.m. — A 63-year-old man was transferred from HCH to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:41 a.m. — A woman involved in a domestic disturbance in the 900 block Melvin St. in Marion was checked by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:25 p.m. — A woman who fell at a home in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

SUNDAY

1:10 a.m. — Details of a call to Hillsboro ambulance were not recorded because of technical problems.

1:51 p.m. — Firefighters from Florence, Cedar Point, Marion, Peabody, and Burns battled a large grass fire that threatened at least one structure two miles east of Florence on US-50. Firefighters remained on the scene for almost 3½ hours.

2:24 p.m. — A dizzy, nauseated 82-year-old man with a history of stroke was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from the 400 block of Elm St. in Marion.

6:34 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Salina Regional Medical Center.

7:12 p.m. — Marion ambulance initially was dispatched to the 300 block of W. Marion St. in Lehigh, where a combative man reportedly was bleeding after punching through windows. However, the call was canceled by a sheriff’s deputy on the scene.

MONDAY

1:16 a.m. — A utility pole downed by high winds at 7th and Poplar Sts. in Peabody was investigated by Peabody firefighters, who determined that a wire lying across the street was a cable TV line, not a power line.

9:42 a.m. — Details of a call to Burns firefighters were not recorded because of technical problems.

10:21 a.m. — A man experiencing chest pains in the 300 block of E. A St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:18 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman was transferred from St. Luke to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

4:34 p.m. — A 50-year-old woman who was having trouble getting up in the 1500 block of Victory Lane in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:32 p.m. — A combine fire at 120th and Goldenrod Rds. was extinguished in less than an hour by Goessel firefighters.
