Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 21

10:17 a.m. — A 61-year-old man who fell in a bathroom at an apartment in the 100 block of W. Santa Fe St. in Marion was treated with fentanyl and taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance.

11:55 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance responded to accidental activation of a medical alarm in the 200 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro.

2:52 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to Salina Regional Medical Center.

DEC. 22

1:22 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell and hurt her neck at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to Newton Medical Center by Peabody ambulance, its sole available attendant augmented by the ambulance service’s shift supervisor, based in Marion. Each had to radio in to ask that someone come to the nursing home’s door to let them in.

9:31 a.m. — A 50-year-old man who bumped his knee and cut his hand when he fell in his driveway in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:33 p.m. — Tampa ambulance took a patient to St. Luke. Details of the call were garbled.

4:04 p.m. — A woman involved in a one-vehicle accident at 210th and Diamond Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital. Tampa and Hillsboro ambulances, a Durham first responder, and Hillsboro firefighters all were dispatched to the accident.

THURSDAY

2:53 p.m. — A Hillsboro Community Hospital patient was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke and back for a computerized tomography scan.

6:38 p.m. — A woman just released from a hospital needed help from Marion ambulance to get out of a vehicle and upstairs to her residence near 180th and Wagon Wheel Rds.

10:01 p.m. — A 16-year-old boy who overdosed on over-the-counter pain and sleep medication in the 300 block of E. Commercial St. in Goessel was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, after being diverted there by Newton Med. A first responder from Goessel helped with the call.

CHRISTMAS EVE

7:29 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman who hurt her leg and back in a fall at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken by Peabody ambulance to Newton Med.

11:21 a.m. — A man who hurt his shoulder when he fell off an eight-foot ladder in a field near 80th and Holly Rds. was taken by Peabody ambulance to Wesley after being diverted there by Newton Med.

7:31 p.m. — In a series of special announcements continuing a tradition believed to have begun in this area more than 60 years ago by Sterling “Squeak” Frame, dispatchers announced to all units that an unidentified flying object appearing to be a sleigh and reindeer, one with a bright red nose, appeared to be heading into the county.

9:47 p.m. — A 66-year-old man who fell in a bathroom in the 100 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody was helped up by attendants from Peabody ambulance, who had to remind a dispatcher that she had neglected to provide an address for the call.

CHRISTMAS

12:07 a.m. — A 79-year-old woman who slipped out of a chair was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital. First responders from Florence also were paged but did not answer. In neither page did dispatchers provide a location for the call. The patient, originally identified as a man, was identified as a woman in subsequent transmissions.

8:02 a.m. — A 23-year-old man who fell and hit his head on a cabinet in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

8:20 a.m. — A 79-year-old woman complaining of leg pain and inability to walk at a Parkside Homes duplex in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:18 a.m. — The same 79-year-old woman who fell out of her chair shortly after midnight fell again and complained of hip pain. Florence first responders again were paged but did not answer. This time, dispatchers provided an address, in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence. The woman again declined to be taken to a hospital, this time telling an ambulance shift supervisor before the actual ambulance arrived.

10:51 a.m. — An 85-year-old woman who hit her head after falling at a Parkside Homes apartment was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:25 p.m. — A vomiting 40-year-old woman identified by code words as being a suspected COVID-19 patient was taken by Marion ambulance from the 100 block of E. 9th St in Florence, next door to two previous calls in that block, to Ascencion Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. Florence first responders again were paged but did not respond.

2:58 p.m. — An unresponsive but breathing 72-year-old man was picked up by Hillsboro ambulance at Salem Home. The ambulance headed to St. Francis. However, it blew a tire on I-135 between Newton and Wichita, and a Sedgwick County ambulance completed the run. The Marion County ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:42 p.m.

SUNDAY

7:13 a.m. — A St. Francis patient was transferred back to Salem Home by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:50 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to McPherson Center for Health by Marion ambulance.

9:40 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance traveled to St. Luke for a reason not explained in monitored broadcasts.

2:52 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:08 p.m. — A 95-year-old woman not feeling well at a garbled address declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

4:31 p.m. — An 82-year-old man thought to be having a stroke at a farmhouse near 130th and Sunflower Rds. was taken to St. Francis by Marion ambulance.

5:48 p.m. — A 73-year-old woman not feeling well and having trouble breathing in the 100 block of E. 9th St. of Florence was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke. First responders from Florence again did not answer a page. St. Luke conferred with ambulance attendants by telephone about possibly diverting the patient, whom garbled transmissions indicated may have been suspected of being a COVID-19 sufferer, to another hospital. Tampa ambulance was asked to stand by midway between Marion and Hillsboro while both ambulances were outside their normal service areas and neither Peabody nor Florence ambulances were staffed.

9:14 p.m. — A partially garbled transmission appeared to indicate that Marion ambulance was asked to report to St. Luke to help personnel there for about an hour.

MONDAY

9:07 a.m. — Hillsboro and Peabody ambulances were dispatched to a report of a person with a do-not-resuscitate order who died at a residence near 70th and Goldenrod Rds. A coroner was dispatched.

11:02 a.m. — A patient whose injuries or illness were garbled in radio transmissions was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from an apartment in the 1500 block of Victory Lane in Marion.

2:37 p.m. — Marion ambulance took at patient to HCH. Details of the call were garbled.

5:50 p.m. — Marion ambulance responded to a call in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence. Details were garbled.

10:17 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance took a patient to HCH. Details were garbled.
