Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

FEB. 22

5:49 a.m. — At the request of St. Luke Hospital, a woman having trouble breathing in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to the hospital by Marion ambulance.

1:15 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman, found incoherent in a bathroom at a residence in the 300 block of W. 3rd St. in Hillsboro, was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance helped with the call.

5:05 a.m. — A 58-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

7:54 p.m. — Smoke thought to be from a furnace in the basement of a residence in the 400 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody forced the evacuation of three residents and multiple dogs.

Smoke was rolling from the front door when firefighters from Peabody arrived. Peabody ambulance also was dispatched to check the home’s occupants. Florence and Marion firefighters were summoned as well, but most were told to disregard the call after no flames were discovered.

Subsequent investigation, including a successful search for one remaining dog that had not escaped, focused on overheated wiring. Firefighters remained on the scene for 1½ hours to ensure there was no danger.

9:34 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Newton Med by a Lifestar helicopter.

10:36 p.m. — A 23-year-old female patient at HCH was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro airport for transport by what apparently was a second helicopter.

10:44 p.m. — Yet another HCH patient was transferred by helicopter from the hospital’s landing pad.

FEB. 23

5:42 a.m. — A 60-year-old male patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center.

3:19 p.m. — A report of smoke in an attic at a farmhouse near Bison and 350th Rds. was quickly dealt with by Roxbury, Tampa, and Durham firefighters. Tampa ambulance stood by during the call.

THURSDAY

3:01 a.m. — A 61-year-old man with abdominal pain was taken by Hillsboro ambulance from the 200 block of S. Buller St in Goessel to Newton Medical Center. First responders from Goessel were called but did not reply.

10:31 a.m. — A 94-year-old woman who fell and briefly passed out in her kitchen in the 700 block of Lawrence Ave. in Durham was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance. A first responder from Durham helped with the call.

3:51 p.m. — A man whose medical alarm was activated after he fell in a bedroom at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

5:17 p.m. — A 33-year-old woman with a racing pulse and feelings of lightheadedness at Zera Coffee in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke.

6:44 p.m. — A 54-year-old male patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

9:05 p.m. — St. Luke requested assistance from Marion ambulance attendants with establishing an unspecified bypass. Attendants were back in their quarters in less than an hour.

FRIDAY

No fire or ambulance calls were monitored.

SATURDAY

6:16 a.m. — A 35-year-old woman having cold sweats and vomiting at Country Haven Inn motel’s office in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:17 p.m. — Goessel firefighters spent 1½ hours controlling an intentional field fire that grew out of control at 120th and Goldenrod Rds.

7:10 p.m. — A Goessel firefighter notified dispatchers that a smoke detector mistakenly was set off at Alexanderwohl Church.

9:30 p.m. — On her physician’s orders, a 90-year-old woman with difficulty breathing was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes to HCH.

11:39 p.m. — St. Luke requested brief help in its emergency room from Marion ambulance attendants.

SUNDAY

1:42 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman with a heart condition was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

3:51 p.m. — Two Tabor College athletes were killed and a third seriously injured in a fiery one-vehicle accident on Indigo Rd. near 130th Rd.

Peabody and Hillsboro ambulances and Hillsboro firefighters and rescue squad members worked the scene, with Hillsboro ambulance taking the injured passenger to Wesley, departing before a helicopter ambulance could arrive.

An additional fire truck was called several hours later to help with clearing the scene. Firefighters remained there for nearly six hours.

10:24 a.m. — A 48-year-old man experiencing weakness at a residence in the 800 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody stopped breathing before Peabody ambulance arrived.

Marion and Hillsboro ambulance and Peabody firefighters were summoned to provide additional help, but the patient revived and appeared to be suffering a diabetic reaction. Hillsboro ambulance was told to disregard the call.

Peabody ambulance attempted to take the patient to Newton Med but was diverted by Newton to St. Francis.

4:11 p.m. — A 90-year-old woman who fell and suffered a bleeding head injury at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder help with the call.

4:39 p.m. — A controlled burn spread to the roof of an unoccupied antique limestone barn near 190th and Upland Rds. just east of Marion.

Marion, Peabody, and Hillsboro firefighters and Marion ambulance initially were summoned, but all but Marion firefighters were quickly told to disregard the call.

Property owners then informed firefighters that they would just as soon allow the structure to burn, so Marion firefighters left the scene.

7:55 p.m. — A 90-year-old man who slipped out of his walker at Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:20 p.m. — A 55-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Oakwood Manor apartments in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance, filling in for Hillsboro ambulance, which was still on its earlier call. First responders from Hillsboro helped with the call.

MONDAY

11:45 a.m. — A grass fire at 40th and Wagon Wheel Rd. quickly was extinguished by Burns firefighters.

3:35 p.m. — A burning bush adjacent to a house in the 300 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro was extinguished within four minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

5:27 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance responded to a call about an unattended death at a Bethesda Home duplex on Meadow Lane in Goessel. A coroner was dispatched as well.

9:19 p.m. — A 17-year-old girl, reportedly a victim of sexual assault, was transported by Hillsboro ambulance from a farm residence near Lehigh.

The ambulance waited until a sheriff’s deputy and a Hillsboro police officer arrived before approaching. The acting sheriff also came on duty in response to the call, and officers began searching for a suspect vehicle at several residences in Marion and Florence.

After loading the patient, whose physical injuries were not deemed significant, the ambulance was diverted from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita.

10:56 p.m. — On his physician’s orders, a 59-year-old man with back and head pain after receiving a spinal injection earlier in the day was taken by Peabody ambulance to Newton Med from the 200 block of E. 4th St. in Peabody.
