Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 15

3:07 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman complaining of stomach pain and vomiting at Parkside Homes apartments in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:26 a.m. — A field fire that spread to a neighbor’s brush pile between 220th and 230th Rds. on Alamo Rd. was extinguished by Hillsboro firefighters, who spent nearly two hours battling the blaze.

11:39 a.m. — A 34-year-old semi-trailer driver complaining of eye pain at Flying Eagle Truck Stop in Florence was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by the county’s backup ambulance, filling in for Marion ambulance. First responders from Florence were paged but did not answer.

1:28 p.m. — Grass that caught fire while pipe was being cut near 60th and Mustang Rds. was extinguished within half an hour by Peabody firefighters.

1:40 p.m. — A 79-year-old man who was engulfed in flames after a welding accident that also set grass on fire in the 700 block of S. Coble St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance and transferred by helicopter to Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Wichita. After some initial confusion over the address, originally was given as being two blocks away, Marion firefighters extinguished the grass fire.

4:16 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman experiencing swelling and difficulty breathing after recent surgery was taken from the 200 block of N. Buller St. in Goessel to Newton Medical Center by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel tended the patient before the ambulance arrived.

5:51 p.m. — A lethargic 81-year-old woman, reported not to be alert, was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from the 400 block of S. Cedar St. in Hillsboro.

9:51 p.m. — A controlled burn that spread to a brush pile near Quail Creek and 350th Rds. was brought back under control within 30 minutes by Ramona firefighters.

MARCH 16

10:50 a.m. — A 62-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

11:21 a.m. — Rekindled hay bales on fire along 360th Rd. between Nighthawk and Mustang Rds. were extinguished after two hours by Ramona firefighters, including a county emergency medical technician assigned to Marion ambulance and a county motor grader operator, on whose land the fire occurred. Lost Springs and Tampa firefighters initially were called, but the call for their help was canceled.

11:41 a.m. — A 52-year-old man feeling ill at a residence on Schlotthauer Dr. at Eastshore was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance, apparently filling in for Marion ambulance.

12:02 p.m. — A 57-year-old woman with chest pains at a residence in the 100 block of Kansas St. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. A Lincolnville first responder monitored the patient until the ambulance arrived.

2:04 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

4:40 p.m. — Another St. Luke patient was transferred, this time to Wesley, by Marion ambulance.

6:05 p.m. — After activating a medical alarm, a woman having trouble breathing in the 200 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance, filling in for Marion ambulance, which was still in Wichita

8:57 p.m. — A possible overdose victim discovered by a sheriff’s deputy in a vehicle in a ditch at 190th and Nighthawk Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

7:57 p.m. — A 90-year-old man was transferred from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:44 p.m. — Embers from arcing wires at an Evergy electric substation at US-56 and Bison Rd. were monitored for nearly two hours by Hillsboro firefighters.

11:19 p.m. — A 93-year-old male cardiac patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

FRIDAY

4:52 a.m. — A 59-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Newton Med.

9:52 p.m. — Without being dispatched by radio, Hillsboro ambulance responded to an unspecified situation at Uptown Condominiums in Hillsboro at the same time as a Hillsboro police officer was being summoned to a different unit to investigate a report of a prowler. No further information was available from monitored radio transmissions.

SATURDAY

11:55 a.m. — A 25-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

12:35 p.m. — A motorist complaining of arm pain after a one-vehicle accident at K-150 and Clover Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

2:24 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was placed on standby after a report of a possibly suicidal person with a knife at a residence in the 300 block of S. Cedar St. in Hillsboro. Two Hillsboro officers and two sheriff’s deputies responded, although the deputies later were called away to a disturbance in Florence. One person was taken to HCH by one of the Hillsboro officers, and another was taken there by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro police remained at the hospital until 4:44 p.m.

11:34 p.m. — A 54-year-old man who aspirated medication after hip replacement surgery was taken to Newton Med by Marion ambulance. Peabody ambulance also was paged but did not answer. However, a Peabody firefighter helped with the patient until the ambulance and an ambulance shift supervisor arrived from Marion.

SUNDAY

1:28 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to St. Francis by Marion ambulance.

4:34 p.m. — A 60-year-old woman having trouble breathing in the 300 block of N. C St. in Ramona was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance.

7:56 p.m. — A garden fire at 5th and Peabody Sts. in Peabody was extinguished within 15 minutes by Peabody firefighters. Florence and Burns firefighters and Peabody ambulance also were paged but were told to disregard the call.

MONDAY

2:26 a.m. — A erratic and violent 28-year-old man, possibly suffering from a drug overdose, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance from the 100 block of W. 5th St. in Florence. Two sheriff’s deputies also responded to the call. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

8:20 a.m. — Hillsboro firefighters responded to a false alarm at Cedar Hall apartments at Tabor College.

8:24 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman with low blood sugar was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH in the 700 block of Lawrence St. in Durham. A Durham first responder arrived shortly after the ambulance to assist.

11:15 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman who hurt her back at a residence in the 1000 block of Tanglewood St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance but told ambulance attendants she would be going by private vehicle.
