Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JUNE 28

12:34 p.m. — A Parkside Homes resident with symptoms of stroke was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:10 p.m. — An 81-year-old man who fell eight feet at a farm on Pawnee Rd. south of the Marion/Dickinson County line was taken by Marion ambulance to Salina Regional Health Center. Tampa ambulance, wrongly thought to have only one crew member available, also responded. Marion ambulance returned to its station at 5:44 p.m.

4:10 p.m. — With Marion ambulance out of the county and Florence ambulance not staffed or certified to transport patients, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to a traffic accident 1½ miles northwest of Florence on US-77. A vehicle had veered off the roadway, down an incline, and into trees that obscured it. The ambulance arrived 15 minutes after the initial dispatch. While en route, one of its medics asked that Peabody ambulance also be dispatched, although that later was deemed unnecessary, and that Tampa ambulance be paged to stand by near Canada in case of additional calls. A patient with facial injuries was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, arriving at 4:52 p.m. Florence firefighters also responded to the accident. Tampa ambulance remained at Canada until 5:08 p.m.

4:40 p.m. — A gas meter hit by a vehicle in an alley between the 200 blocks of S. Roosevelt and Cedar Sts. in Marion was rendered safe by Marion firefighters.

6:01 p.m. — A medical alarm accidentally was activated by a patient taking a shower at a residence in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. Hillsboro ambulance attendants were told the disregard the call before the ambulance arrived.

9:35 p.m. — A 76-year-old man with a low level of hemoglobin was transferred from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance. The ambulance arrived at NMC at 10:39 p.m. and was back in its station at 11:43 p.m.

JUNE 29

2:27 a.m. — A possible stroke victim was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to the emergency room of Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, arriving there at 3:54 a.m.

3:32 a.m. — A 34-year-old woman, 36 weeks’ pregnant and in labor while being driven west along US-50, rendezvoused with Peabody ambulance at the Peabody Dollar General store and was taken by the ambulance from there to NMC. A paramedic from Hillsboro ambulance, which also was dispatched, joined the Peabody crew at Indigo Rd. extended. While arranging for the addition to the ambulance crew, a Peabody crew member told dispatchers that the baby would be the woman’s fourth and that the third had been born in a car. Before joining the Peabody crew, a Hillsboro medic asked for Tampa ambulance to be paged and stand by near Canada until 4:36 a.m., while Peabody and Hillsboro ambulance were handling this call and Marion ambulance was out of the county. Peabody ambulance returned to its station at 4:41 a.m.; Hillsboro ambulance, at 4:49 p.m.; Tampa ambulance, at 5 a.m.; and Marion ambulance, at 5:15 a.m.

10:03 a.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance on a non-emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita, arriving at 11:23 p.m. and returning to its quarters at 12:49 p.m.

10:47 a.m. — A medical alarm in the 200 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro was determined by a nearby off-duty EMT to be a false alarm. A call to Hillsboro ambulance was canceled before the ambulance arrived.

5:26 p.m. — A report of a tree burning near Cincinnati and Liberty Sts. in Burns was checked by a Burns firefighter and determined to be a controlled burn.

THURSDAY

9:30 p.m. — A 48-year-old woman with an indecipherable condition was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from in the 200 block of W. 6th St. in Florence. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

FRIDAY

2:34 p.m. — A hospice patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from Wesley to a residence on Rose Lane at Marion County Lake. The ambulance was back in its quarters at 6:11 p.m.

2:56 p.m. — A 55-year-old woman complaining of vomiting and dizziness at Pizza Hut in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:35 p.m. — A 60-year-old man with abdominal pain at a duplex in the 300 block of N. Ash St. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:21 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman who fell at an apartment at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

11:17 p.m. — A man found by police lying face down in front of a rental home in the 500 block of N. Cedar St. proved to be extremely intoxicated. A call to Marion ambulance was canceled before the ambulance arrived.

SATURDAY

5:29 a.m. — Dispatchers received no answer when paging Peabody and then Florence firefighters about a fire alarm at Westview Manor in Peabody. However, within two minutes, the call was canceled as a false alarm.

11:17 a.m. — A Lincolnville first responder came across a one-vehicle accident at US-56/77 and 310th Rd. even before dispatchers were able to summon Lincolnville firefighters and Marion ambulance. Marion rescue squad asked whether it should respond as well and was told to do so, then was told by Lincolnville’s fire chief that it would not be needed. One person involved in the accident was taken to Herington Hospital.

4:48 p.m. — A second fire alarm at Westview Manor again proved to be a false alarm. This time, Peabody firefighters arrived at the nursing home and checked the facility.

8:47 p.m. — A 34-year-old man who fell from a bed and pulled a TV stand on top of him at Hilltop Manor in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to NMC. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 11:18 p.m.

9:06 p.m. — Without being dispatched by radio, Hillsboro ambulance went to St. Luke for an emergency transfer of a patient to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. The ambulance didn’t return to Hillsboro until 1:13 a.m.

10:28 p.m. — With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances still on their calls, dispatchers sent Peabody ambulance and Hillsboro firefighters to the 300 block of S. Kennedy St. in Hillsboro for a 2-year-old having trouble crying between breaths. Hillsboro’s fire chief, who also is an EMT, was among the first on the scene and within five minutes radioed that the child was doing better and that parents would be taking the child to a hospital themselves. The call to Peabody ambulance was canceled, and an impromptu effort by two off-duty ambulance attendants in the northern part of the county to go to Tampa and staff the ambulance there in case of additional emergencies was called off.

SUNDAY

7:50 a.m. — A 90-year-old woman shaking and feeling weak at an apartment in the 600 block of E. Main St. in Goessel was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

10:38 a.m. — An ambulance shift supervisor and Hillsboro ambulance reported to HCH to assist personnel there. The ambulance then shuttled an air ambulance crew from Hillsboro airport for HCH and back to the airport with a patient. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 1:35 p.m.

3:06 p.m. — Marion ambulance responded to a medical alarm activated by a 79-year-old woman who fell in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence and could not get up. She declined to be taken to a hospital. Florence first responders also were paged but did not answer.

MONDAY

2:21 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance on a non-emergency basis to Wesley Children’s Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance was back in its quarters at 4: 28 p.m.

6:15 p.m. — A Peabody Fourth Fest spectator with symptoms of heat stroke was checked by Peabody ambulance attendants stationed on the grounds.

6:27 p.m. — A 15-year-old girl experiencing dizziness, fainting, and having no feeling from the neck down was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from a farm near 190th and Holly Rd.

9:06 p.m. — Fire in a garage containing fireworks at a farm home on Comanche Rd. (150th Rd. extended), 1½ miles west of the Marion/McPherson County line was extinguished within 40 minutes by Goessel firefighters, who spent additional time putting out a fire that had spread to a tree. They remained on the scene until 10:51 p.m.

9:46 p.m. — Fireworks caught a grass field on fire on 350th Rd. between Upland and Vista Rds., but neighbors were able to extinguish the fire before Lost Springs firefighters and a Ramona firefighter who had a water truck nearby were able to respond. Firefighters continued to the scene to check for hot spots.

10:01 p.m. — Police alerted Peabody firefighters to a fire in a tree near where fireworks were being shot at Peabody Fourth Fest. Firefighters extinguished the fire within 20 minutes.

10:05 p.m. — A 33-year-old man having trouble breathing and experiencing an altered level of consciousness in the 500 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance, which had been standing by at Fourth Fest.

11:08 p.m. — A 78-year-old man fell at a residence in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody and needed help getting up. Peabody ambulance responded but asked for help lifting the patient. By that time, Peabody firefighters were busy with a mobile home fire. Medics asked for help from Peabody police, but they too said they were too busy with the fire, so Undersheriff Larry Starkey, who resides nearby and had just gone off duty, volunteered to help. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:20 p.m. — An unoccupied mobile home near Spruce and 2nd Sts. in Peabody, on the other side of town from the Fourth Fest fireworks, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters from Peabody, Florence, and Burns arrived to fight what one firefighter termed a defensive battle. They remained on the scene until 1:38 a.m.
