Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

AUG. 2

9:24 a.m. — A 100-year-old man having trouble breathing at Parkside Assisted Living in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:40 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman who was dizzy and fell at a residence in the 400 block of Brairwood Lane in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance, filling in for Hillsboro ambulance, which was still handling the previous call. First responders from Hillsboro fire department tended to the patient before the ambulance arrived.

2:56 p.m. — A 78-year-old man not feeling well after a previous visit to a hospital was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital from the 100 block of N. Coble St.

3:41 p.m. — A woman suffering what appeared to be a diabetic episode at a farmhouse near 300th and Xavier Rds. reported to a deputy sheriff that she was feeling better before Tampa ambulance could arrive. Marion ambulance, which had not been dispatched, volunteered to go and arrived next on the scene. The call to Tampa ambulance was canceled, and the patient declined to be taken to a hospital. Lincolnville first responders also were called but did not answer.

6:30 p.m. — A reportedly intoxicated patron thought to be acting strangely left a truck at D&J Liquor in Marion and walked two blocks to near County Inn motel, where at a Marion police officer’s request he was checked by medics from Marion ambulance. He was not taken to a hospital but was detained by police until a female family member, brought by a deputy sheriff, could pick up him and the truck.

AUG. 3

7:55 a.m. — An 81-year-old woman suffering shoulder and facial pain after a fall the day before was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance from the 100 block of N. Wilson St. in Hillsboro.

3:59 p.m. — A 95-year-old woman on blood thinners who fell and was bleeding from the back of her head at Frick Properties apartments in the 200 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:25 p.m. — A gastrointestinal patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 6:42 p.m.

6:44 p.m. — What was reported as a small grass fire south of K-150 between Bluestem and Clover Rds. could not be found by Marion firefighters.

9:13 p.m. — A 64-year-old woman who reportedly suffered a stroke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 11:25 p.m.

9:25 p.m. — Marion and Peabody ambulances were dispatched along with a sheriff’s deputy and Peabody firefighters and rescue squad members to a traffic accident involving a car and a deer three miles east of Peabody on US-50. After medics questioned dispatchers and learned only that one person was complaining about a bump on his leg, Marion ambulance stood down. A Peabody officer, not initially dispatched, arrived first and determined that the accident actually was four miles from Peabody. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance.

THURSDAY

2:33 a.m. — A fire alarm at Marion Assisted Living was moments later reported by an alarm company to be a false alarm.

3:01 a.m. — Marion, Florence, and Hillsboro fire departments and Marion ambulance all were dispatched to a report of smoke in a closet at the same location, Marion Assisted Living. Upon arriving, Marion’s fire chief canceled all other responding units and told Marion firefighters to remain outside. Nearly an hour later, he radioed that the facility’s fire suppression system apparently was malfunctioning and had been turned off.

6:10 p.m. — An 83-year-old Pilsen man with heart problems and difficulty breathing was taken by Marion ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance was back in the county at 9:31 p.m.

11:45 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance apparently lacking a full crew, Marion ambulance and first responders from Hillsboro were dispatched for a traffic accident victim with a head injury near Midway Motors in Hillsboro. First responders were told the patient declined to be taken to a hospital, so the call was canceled.

FRIDAY

3:22 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman who fell and hurt her shoulder at a residence in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

5:32 p.m. — With Peabody ambulance apparently unavailable, Hillsboro ambulance was went to the 1000 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody for a person who fell and might have broken an ankle. The patient was taken to NMC Health.

8:11 p.m. — A fire alarm set off by a fog machine at Hillsboro High School was reset by Hillsboro firefighters.

SATURDAY

12:01 p.m. — A 93-year-old man with stroke symptoms at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

2:22 p.m. — Tampa and Marion ambulances and a Lincolnville first responder plus a driver from Lincolnville fire department were summoned for a 23-year-old woman having seizures at a ballpark in Lincolnville. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

4:39 p.m. — A 65-year-old man who fell outside a Victory Lane duplex in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance after medics asked Marion police for help in dealing with him.

7:09 p.m. — A 36-year-old man with an undisclosed condition was transferred from St. Luke to Salina Regional Health Center by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to its station at 10:11 p.m.

9:42 p.m. — A 54-year-old man who fell and hurt his neck at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to Mercy Hospital, Moundridge, by Hillsboro ambulance.

SUNDAY

12:09 a.m. — A 97-year-old woman who fell and was bleeding from above her eye was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from the 400 block of Locust St. in Marion.

12:59 a.m. — As soon as Marion ambulance delivered its patient to St. Luke, it was sent at a Marion police officer’s request to Marion County Jail to draw blood from a newly arrested inmate to check for intoxication.

12:07 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance lacking a full crew, Marion ambulance was sent along with Hillsboro first responders to care for a 69-year-old woman who fell and hit the back of her head in an alley in the 300 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro. With an emergency medical technician from Hillsboro fire department apparently joining the lone medic on Hillsboro ambulance, the woman was taken to HCH, and Marion ambulance was allowed to return to its station.

4:36 p.m. —Tampa ambulance was called, but a Dickinson County ambulance responded instead to a report of a 12-year-old girl who fell off a trampoline onto her head at a farm house near 340th and Sunflower Rd.

MONDAY

10:54 p.m. — A fire alarm accidentally activated at Harms Hall on the Tabor College campus was reset by Hillsboro firefighters.
