Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
SEPT. 6
2:45 p.m. — A 57-year-old man with gastrointestinal issues was transferred by Marion ambulance on a nonemergency basis from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 5:54 p.m.
7:36 p.m. — A vomiting 30-year-old woman with a history of seizures was checked by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital from the 100 block of W. 3rd St. in Florence. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.
SEPT. 7
3:15 a.m. — A 68-year-old man with unspecified medical issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance on a nonemergency basis from Hillsboro Community Hospital to NMC Health, Newton. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:52 a.m.
11:09 a.m. — An uninjured 75-year-old woman who fell at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants and declined to be taken to a hospital.
12:22 p.m. — A patient with unspecified medical issues was transferred by Marion ambulance on an emergency basis from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance arrived at St. Luke at 12:30 p.m., but the transfer was delayed until 1:56 p.m. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:03 p.m.
THURSDAY
1:41 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman worried about passing out from heat at Peabody Post Office declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance.
3:21 p.m. — A trash fire at Hillsboro’s recycling center was battled for nearly three hours by Hillsboro firefighters.
5:22 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance went to Goessel to stand by during a football game. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:17 p.m.
5:53 p.m. — Tampa ambulance went to Centre schools to stand by during a football game. The ambulance returned to Tampa at 8:16 p.m.
FRIDAY
6:36 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 9:16 p.m. during a football game in Marion.
10:38 p.m. — At a police officer’s request, Hillsboro ambulance attendants were called to evaluate the situation after a caller told dispatchers her mother had been injured by her stepfather during a disturbance at a residence in the 700 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro. No one was taken to a hospital, but a man described as intoxicated and psychologically disturbed was jailed by one of three sheriff’s deputies who also responded.
SATURDAY
9:12 a.m. — In what was billed as a training exercise, Peabody and Walton firefighters monitored a controlled burn of wheat stubble at Limestone and 80th Rds. but later canceled the burn because humidity was too high.
12:31 p.m. — A 70-year-old man in the 300 block of N. Elm St. in Burns with Stage 4 cancer and suffering stomach and back pain initially was rated by Burns first responders as being in possibly life-threatening condition. However, the patient decided 25 minutes later, before Marion ambulance arrived, that he felt good enough to go to a hospital by private vehicle instead of ambulance. The ambulance arrived back at its station at 1:30 p.m.
5:57 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters participated in Hillsboro’s downtown cruise.
8:56 p.m. — Less than half an hour after a Peabody officer could not locate cows reported to be roaming free near US-50 and the Family Dollar and Dollar Tree store in Peabody, a motorist on US-50 struck two of them. Peabody firefighters, rescue squad members, and ambulance and Marion ambulance all were dispatched along with a sheriff’s deputy. However, the call to Marion ambulance quickly was canceled. The driver involved in the accident declined to be taken to a hospital. Traffic along US-50 was disrupted for more than an hour.
10:20 p.m. — A 32-year-old woman in the 100 block of E. 7th St. in Florence was pronounced dead after a man who called dispatchers to say she was unconscious could not keep up cardiopulmonary resuscitation during the 12 minutes before Marion ambulance arrived. Hillsboro ambulance also was paged, but Florence first responders and firefighters were not.
SUNDAY
3:37 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell at a farmhouse near Bluestem and 230th Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded.
8:42 a.m. — A neighbor reported that a resident of the 300 block of W. Marion St. in Lehigh had not been seen in several days and might have died. Hillsboro ambulance attendants were summoned and pronounced him dead.
12:01 p.m. — A helicopter ambulance transferred a patient from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.
5:17 p.m. — A 78-year-old man who lost consciousness and fell in the 100 block of W. 6th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.
MONDAY
12:48 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman who lost consciousness at Mennonite Heritage and Agricultural Museum in Goessel declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel tended to her before the ambulance arrived.
1:12 p.m. — A lethargic 91-year-old woman with back pains and vomiting at a farmhouse near 300th and Goldenrod Rds. was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance.
5:49 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by during a Hillsboro football game.
7:14 p.m. — A 62-year-old man with acute kidney failure was transferred by Marion ambulance on an emergency basis from St. Luke to Wesley, leaving St. Luke at 7:48 p.m. and arriving back in the county at 10:12 p.m.
10:35 p.m. — A 91-year-old woman was transferred on a nonemergency basis by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley’s emergency room. The ambulance departed at 10:59 p.m. and returned to Hillsboro at 12:18 a.m.
11:30 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance en route to Wichita, Marion ambulance and Hillsboro first responders were sent to the 400 block of Floral Dr. for a report of an 80-year-old man possibly having a heart attack. He was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.
