Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JULY 18

9:13 a.m. — On a physician’s orders, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Salem Home in Hillsboro to pick up a 70-year-old woman, but the nursing home called back to say it would take her to a hospital, instead.

11:09 a.m. — A woman found not breathing and cold to the touch at Carriage Manor in Florence was pronounced dead by Marion ambulance attendants. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

JULY 19

8:37 a.m. — A 76-year-old woman who fell and may have broken her shoulder outside a home in the 300 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:56 a.m.

8:42 p.m. — With no Marion police on duty, Marion ambulance issued an urgent request for assistance from sheriff’s deputies, nearly 10 miles away, in dealing with a 23-year-old woman confused after suffering multiple seizures at Hilltop Manor in Marion. The woman eventually declined to be taken to a hospital, preferring to go by private vehicle instead.

11:52 p.m. — The patient from Hilltop Manor was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

THURSDAY

2:48 a.m. — A smoke alarm at the Harms Hall men’s dormitory at Tabor College was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

10:53 a.m. — An 89-year-old man with stroke-like symptoms was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital from Parkside Homes residences in Hillsboro.

2:39 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters supervised burning of a tree dump at 220th and Indigo Rds.

6:48 p.m. — Tampa ambulance was assigned to stand by at the Marion County Fair rodeo in Hillsboro. It returned to Tampa at 10:59 p.m.

8:02 p.m. — Marion firefighters relayed a request from a man who had gone to the Marion police station seeking help locating a missing person. Minutes later, dispatchers received a report of the missing person — a confused woman in her 60s — who had appeared at a residence in the 200 block of Elm St. With no Marion police on duty, a sheriff’s deputy was assigned to reunite the pair.

8:36 p.m. — A 42-year-old man profusely bleeding from his nose at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken to St. Luke by Peabody ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched as well but stood down after learning that Peabody ambulance, often limited to first-response status, was fully staffed.

FRIDAY

6:25 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance took to HCH from the 100 block of S. Floral Dr. in Hillsboro a patient who reportedly could not move his or her left side.

11:55 a.m. — An alarm company’s report of a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence near Alamo and 230th Rd. was investigated by Hillsboro firefighters, who found a small amount of carbon monoxide and summoned a repair crew.

12:36 p.m. — A woman whose head was split open during what she said was a domestic dispute with her daughter in the 800 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was checked by Peabody ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital. Peabody police also responded.

6:13 p.m. — Tampa ambulance again stood by at the county fair in Hillsboro, returning to Tampa at 9:31 p.m. Hillsboro firefighters also stood by during motorcycle races.

9:06 p.m. — On a physician’s orders, an 80-year-old man with sudden weight gain at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

SATURDAY

1:06 a.m. — An 80-year-old man, possibly the same one taken there earlier, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Ambulance attendants had to ask dispatchers to have a hospital door unlocked. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:14 a.m.

10:18 a.m. — A 42-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a home in the 100 block of S. Washington St. in Burns was checked by Burns first responders and Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital. Peabody ambulance initially was dispatched as well but was told to stand down.

11:55 a.m. — A 66-year-old woman with pain in her legs was taken by Peabody ambulance to NMC Health from a home in the 700 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody. Dispatchers had to be asked to provide the address, which was not included in the original dispatch. Peabody firefighters were called to help lift the patient. The ambulance returned to Peabody at 1:13 p.m.

4:52 p.m. — Florence, Hillsboro, Marion, and Peabody firefighters and Peabody ambulance stood by until after 10 p.m. during a demolition derby at Marion County Fair in Hillsboro.

7:45 p.m. — A downed power line to a house in the 400 block of Maria St. in Lehigh was monitored by Lehigh firefighters until an Evergy repair crew arrived. En route to the call, a firefighter noted power poles down east of Diamond Rd. on US-56 and multiple power lines down in town. Firefighters also checked what turned out to be a false automated alarm about a fire in the 100 block of N. Prospect Ave.

8 p.m. — Durham firefighters responded to the 600 block of Abilene Ave. in Durham for what appeared to a false fire alarm attributable to weather.

SUNDAY

12:03 a.m. — A 23-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to the trauma unit at St. Francis. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:40 a.m.

9:38 a.m. — A 77-year-old woman complaining of leg pain and lack of normal alertness in the 500 block of N. Topeka St. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders were paged but did not answer.

10:22 a.m. — At the request of Marion firefighters, a woman short of breath after being stung by a wasp the day before was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from Good News Christian Fellowship in Marion.

2:05 p.m. — An 85-year-old man who pulled out a nasogastric tube at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:42 p.m. — Police asked that Hillsboro ambulance attendants to check a confused man found in the 700 block of Olive St. in Peabody. He was taken to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:35 p.m.

4:32 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance still on a call to Newton, Marion ambulance transferred an HCH patient back to Parkside Homes.

7:37 p.m. — Fire in a sport-utility vehicle’s engine compartment on US-56 east of Limestone Rd. was extinguished within half an hour by Marion firefighters.

MONDAY

7:56 a.m. — A 63-year-old woman who had been vomiting for several hours at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was taken to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:42 a.m. A lone emergency medical technician aboard Peabody ambulance provided initial care.

12:36 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance and rescue squad, Durham firefighters and first responders, and Marion ambulance all were dispatched, and an helicopter ambulance contacted, in response to a passerby’s report of a rollover accident in a field west of Durham near Goldenrod and 285th Rds. The county ambulance director also responded. Initial responders found an unoccupied pickup, and all other responders to stand down.

1:10 p.m. — A 78-year-old man who had been vomiting and could not be placed in a car for a return to a nursing home was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from a farmhouse near 110th and Sunflower Rds.

2:08 a.m. — A weak, lethargic 68-year-old man, unable to get to his car to go to a physician’s office, was taken by Marion ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from the 300 block of W. Main St. in Burns. Burns first responders provided initial care. The ambulance returned to Marion at 5:23 p.m.

7:52 p.m. — A man whom sheriff’s deputies said was bleeding from his mouth after a domestic disturbance in the 200 block of W. 8th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.
