Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

JAN. 2

4:55 a.m. — A 37-year-old man, sick for several days before his wife found him passed out at a residence in the 300 block of 8th St. in Durham, was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Durham first responder arrived after the ambulance.

8:27 a.m. — A 56-year-old man with pancreatitis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:30 a.m.

1:46 p.m. — Fire in the engine compartment of a pickup truck at Main and Elm Sts. in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters.

JAN. 3

7:45 a.m. — Two people involved in a two-vehicle accident on slick roads with low visibility at US-56 and Bison Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital. Hillsboro and Marion ambulances and Hillsboro firefighters and rescue squad members initially were dispatched. The county ambulance director also responded, but Marion ambulance and most Hillsboro firefighters were told to stand down before they arrived.

8:39 p.m. — A 91-year-old man drifting in and out of consciousness at a farmhouse on Bluestem Rd. a mile north of US-50 was evaluated as being in potentially life-threatening condition but declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, which arrived 24 minutes after the call came in.

8:49 p.m. — A 91-year-old woman who fell and hurt her shoulder at Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:01 p.m. — What appeared to be the same patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to a trauma unit at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:52 p.m.

12:10 p.m. — A man involved in a one-vehicle accident in the 100 block of S. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Peabody ambulance with an additional medical technician borrowed from Marion ambulance. Marion ambulance stood by in Hillsboro as a first-response vehicle until the borrowed EMT returned at 1:53 p.m. Peabody firefighters also were dispatched.

11:15 p.m. — Marion, Hillsboro, and Florence firefighters spent nearly 1½ hours battling a smoky chimney fire with flames shooting from the roof of a home in the 200 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion. Marion ambulance also was dispatched.

THURSDAY

12:11 p.m. — A 33-year-old man, lethargic and unable to move after suffering a seizure, falling, and reportedly breaking his ankle at a residence in the 200 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. A lone EMT in Peabody ambulance was first on the scene. Hillsboro ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:20 p.m.

FRIDAY

12:31 a.m. — An 83-year-old man who fell at a farmhouse near 150th and Kanza Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:18 a.m. — A 91-year-old woman not feeling well at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:01 p.m. — Goessel firefighters spent less than an hour dealing with a fire apparently caused by a dryer in the basement of a farmhouse on 28th Ave. north of Buckskin Rd. in McPherson County.

SATURDAY

12:30 a.m. — A 65-year-old woman having trouble breathing in the 500 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

6:20 a.m. — At Dickinson County’s request, Tampa ambulance took a patient from a farmhouse near 300th Ave. and Oat Rd., two miles north of Ramona, to Abilene Memorial Hospital. The ambulance returned to Tampa at 10:51 a.m.

10:08 p.m. — Marion firefighters spent 30 minutes investigating a smoke alarm at Homestead Affordable Housing in Marion.

SUNDAY

11:47 a.m. — Peabody, Florence, and Burns firefighters spent nearly 1½ hours battling a smoky garage fire in the 500 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched.

12:48 p.m. — Returning from the fire in Peabody, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to Parkside Homes to transfer a 98-year-old woman to HCH.

6:46 p.m. — A 96-year-old woman with low blood pressure and a low blood oxygen level at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:37 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman in respiratory failure was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:06 a.m.

MONDAY

12:41 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman experiencing numbness on her side at Salem Home in Hillsboro was transferred to HCH by Marion ambulance, filling in for Hillsboro ambulance.

9:56 p.m. — Marion firefighters and electricians were dispatched to a report of a tree fire caused by arcing of snow-laden limbs contacting power lines near the VFW Post in the 400 block of W. Santa Fe St. in Marion.

10:15 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters and electricians were sent to a similar report of arcing in the 200 block of S. Kennedy St. in Hillsboro.

10:45 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were sent to another report of a tree fire caused by an arcing power line on Goldenrod Rd. between 130th and 140th Rds., but they were called off after the arcing ceased and there was no danger to any structures.

11:13 p.m. — Marion firefighters were dispatched to another report of a tree on fire, this one in the 100 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion, where a limb burned in half.

11:19 p.m. — Marion firefighters noted yet another tree fire in the 100 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion.
