Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

FEB. 20

6:31 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman with abdominal pain, possibly from a gall bladder attack in the 600 block of N. Sycamore St. in Peabody, was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:51 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance attendants checked on a woman at a farm near 230th and Indigo Rds. who accidentally received an overdose of medication at St. Luke Hospital, Marion. The hospital had asked for a sheriff’s deputy to check on her. The deputy asked for the ambulance after he arrived. The woman declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:54 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman facing surgery was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Center for Health.

3:44 p.m. — Fire in a semi-trailer truck on US-50 near Newell Rd. / Walnut St. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Peabody firefighters, but traffic on US-50 was disrupted for more than an hour.

4:51 p.m. — A 9-month-old with respiratory distress was transferred by Marion ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center. Hillsboro ambulance initially was sent to the hospital, but the call was switched to Marion ambulance. Heading back to Marion at 7:06 p.m. and planning to handle a pending transfer from St. Luke Hospital, ambulance attendants were told that the patient had gone by a private vehicle instead. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:16 p.m.

11:52 p.m. — An 87-year-old man who fell at Marion Assisted Living declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

FEB. 21

12:15 p.m. — An 80-year-old man who fell and may have broken his hip at a home on Tanglewood St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

4:42 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s East Hall was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm.

9:38 p.m. — An alarm at Tabor’s Women’s Quad also was determined to be false.

THURSDAY

5:34 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched for a 48-year-old man having a seizure at a home in the 600 block of Hudson St. in Marion. Neither of the newspaper’s scanners recorded the call’s conclusion.

1:16 p.m. — A slow-moving grass fire started by a welder near 190th and Eagle Rds. was extinguished in less than 20 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

3:06 p.m. — A 61-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Center for Health for a surgical consultation. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:40 p.m.

4:11 p.m. — A grass fire that grew out of control at a farm on 230th Rd. west of Bluestem Rd. was extinguished within 35 minutes by Marion firefighters who battled “ugly” roads to get there.

FRIDAY

6:52 p.m. — Dispatchers told Peabody firefighters a caller planned to start a controlled burn, probably within the boundaries of the Peabody fire district, despite a countywide ban on controlled burns because of windy, dry weather.

8:56 p.m. — A 79-year-old woman, vomiting and suffering a seizure at a home in the 200 block of W. 6th St. in Lincolnville, was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders provided initial care.

SATURDAY

11:53 a.m. — A small brush fire near a bridge at Burbridge and Grant Sts. in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters.

12:57 p.m. — Peabody firefighters provided a tanker to help battle a structure and tractor fire for about an hour near NW Tawakoni and NW 140th Rds. in Butler County.

2:43 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:27 p.m.

3:41 p.m. — A 44-year-old woman feeling an oncoming seizure at Casey’s General Store in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance, filling in for Hillsboro ambulance during its call to Wichita. Hillsboro first responders provided initial care.

8:32 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman with anemia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:58 p.m.

8:48 p.m. — A contained but unauthorized fire in a brush pile in an alley in the 700 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody was checked by Peabody firefighters.

SUNDAY

7:45 a.m. — An 83-year-old man who fell and cut his head in the 500 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:06 a.m. — A 64-year-old man with ventricular fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

4:39 p.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm at a farmhouse on 30th Rd. west of Quail Creek Rd. was determined by Peabody firefighters to have been caused by a faulty sensor.

8:01 p.m. — A 28-year-old woman unable to move her right leg at Casey’s General Store in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

1:53 a.m. — An 87-year-old woman with a nosebleed in the 400 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

12:31 p.m. — A shortage of water in Rural Water District No. 1 resulted in firefighters from Ramona, Tampa, Herington, Lincolnville, and Lost Springs (though no one from Lost Springs responded) being called to battle a shed fire in the 400 block of N. D St. in Ramona. Firefighters initially planned to import water from Centre High School, more than 11 miles away, but the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and extinguished 30 minutes after that, and many of the responding units were told to stand down. Tampa ambulance also was called to the fire as a precaution.

2:18 p.m. — What may be Marion County’s oldest resident, a nauseated and vomiting 110-year-old woman, was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from a farmhouse near 290th and Banner Rds. Lincolnville first responders provided initial care.

5:53 p.m. — An 80-year-old man not feeling well at a farmhouse near 230th and Jade Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
