Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 23

6:22 a.m. — A woman who hurt her arm in a one-vehicle accident at US-56/77 and 340th Rd. was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Tampa ambulance. Lost Springs and Lincolnville firefighters, Lincolnville first responders, Herington ambulance, and briefly Herington and Marion rescue squads also were dispatched.

8:33 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance, obtaining supplies 31 miles away in Marion, was dispatched for a report of a suicidal 83-year-old woman at a farmhouse near 80th and Alamo Rds. An ambulance attendant suggested that Hesston ambulance, less than 10 miles away, also be dispatched. It ends up transporting the patient.

8:47 a.m. — An unresponsive 80-year-old man who fell at a home on Hett Hollow in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. The county ambulance director and an off-duty emergency medical technician stood by in Marion and Hillsboro as first responders if additional calls came in.

9:02 a.m. — Peabody firefighters investigated what turned out to be a false alarm about a train axel being on fire along US-50 near Sunflower Rd. Hillsboro ambulance initially was redirected there, but the call was switched to Tampa ambulance, returning from Newton. A lone attendant aboard Peabody ambulance asked to be dispatched as a first response unit but was told to stand down.

10:14 a.m. — A 79-year-old man who fell off his bed at a home in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was helped up by Peabody firefighters and a lone attendant aboard Peabody ambulance. He declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion ambulance initially was dispatched but was told to stand down.

3:38 p.m. — A small ditch fire on US-50 between Limestone and Mustang Rds. was extinguished within 10 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

4:14 p.m. — A 79-year-old man having trouble breathing was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:49 p.m.

9:36 p.m. — After some confusion over the location, Hillsboro ambulance found but did not transport a 3-month-old boy having trouble breathing at an alley apartment in the 100 block of N. Jefferson St. Marion ambulance and Hillsboro first responders also were dispatched.

APRIL 24

3:14 a.m. — Peabody firefighters were called to help clean up debris from a non-injury semi-trailer accident on US-50 at Quail Creek Rd. Peabody police and sheriff’s deputies had directed traffic for more than two hours before firefighters arrived.

8:49 a.m. — A 42-year-old man who suffered a seizure at a residence in the 200 block of W. 7th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

12:29 p.m. — Fire in a small wooden box inside a chicken coop in the 700 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody was extinguished within 10 minutes by Peabody firefighters. Burns and Florence firefighters initially were dispatched but told to stand down.

2:12 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance initially was dispatched to a rental home in the 300 block of N. Poplar St. in Peabody for a report of a 79-year-old man who died of an apparently self-inflected gunshot wound to the head. The county ambulance director responded instead.

4:09 p.m. — An electric transformer arcing and smoking at a substation at 140th Rd. and K-15 was monitored by Goessel firefighters for half an hour until a Flint Hills Rural Electric Cooperative lineman arrived.

6:11 p.m. — A 96-year-old woman who fell and hurt her leg at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:54 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance attendants could not find a woman at Oakwood Manor apartments whom an insurance company social worker had told dispatchers was vomiting after suffering a concussion. The woman’s car was not present, and the social worker reportedly told dispatchers she could not reveal the woman’s name because of privacy regulations.

7:17 p.m. — A 59-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.

7:44 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance took a St. Luke patient back to the patient’s home. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:53 p.m.

8:14 p.m. — The woman who could not be located at Oakwood Manor apartments called dispatchers from there and was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Tampa ambulance, which had been in Hillsboro for training. The ambulance director also responded.

9:13 p.m. — Peabody police reported that a patient choking at Peabody Health and Rehab was receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation before Hillsboro ambulance or a lone EMT aboard Peabody ambulance arrived. Marion ambulance, returning from Wichita, also was dispatched along with the ambulance director. A Peabody firefighter was recruited to drive the patient in Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:36 p.m.

THURSDAY

6:04 a.m. — Fire that fully engulfed a hay barn near 170th and Yarrow Rds. was battled for 3½ hours by firefighters from Lincolnville, Marion, and Florence using additional tankers from the Peabody fire department and privately owned Fire for Hire. Marion ambulance also was dispatched.

8:56 a.m. — A 92-year-old woman vomiting and suffering cold sweats at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:21 a.m.

11:18 a.m. — Marion firefighters reported to Marion police a non-injury traffic accident at Weldon and Roosevelt Sts. in Marion.

8:42 p.m. — A 61-year-old woman with vertigo was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.

9:05 p.m. — Peabody firefighters monitored a tree limb that fell on a power line in the 900 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody until an Evergy lineman arrived.

FRIDAY

2:03 a.m. — An 81-year-old woman with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:50 a.m.

12:44 p.m. — A 78-year-old man with trouble breathing in the 500 block of S. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded.

1:25 p.m. — With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances still busy on the previous call, Tampa ambulance was dispatched for an inmate who fell at the county jail in Marion, but the call was canceled four minutes later.

2:23 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance remained at HCH and transferred a patient to McPherson Center for Health.

3:52 p.m. — Returning from McPherson, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to transfer an HCH patient to a LifeTeam airplane ambulance at Hillsboro airport. Marion ambulance was dispatched to back up Hillsboro ambulance if it didn’t return from McPherson in time. However, plans apparently changed, the airborne ambulance was not used, and Hillsboro ambulance took the patient to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:33 p.m.

7:51 p.m. — Still not back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to transfer a 66-year-old man with a spinal fracture from HCH to Wesley. However, Marion ambulance attendants decided to make the transfer instead. Their ambulance returned to Marion at 10:41 p.m.

SATURDAY

10:54 a.m. — An 88-year-old woman throwing up with stomach pain at a home in the 700 block of E. Main St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:35 p.m. — Marion firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy blocked traffic on Cedar St. near Prairieland Partners in Marion for half an hour because of a downed power pole and line. An arcing power transformer reported at 3:56 p.m. at Elm and Lawrence Sts. also was monitored until city crews arrived.

4:01 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman with chest pains was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

5:49 p.m. — A tree that fell against a power pole, but not a power line, at Main and Lombard Sts. in Lincolnville was checked by Lincolnville firefighters pending arrival of an Evergy crew.

7:34 p.m. — Alarms sounding without an obvious reason at a home in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro were checked by Hillsboro firefighters, who found no problems.

SUNDAY

4:05 a.m. — An 82-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:55 a.m.

12:36 p.m. — A 90-year-old man experiencing pain after recent surgery was taken by Tampa ambulance to HCH from the 800 block of Lawrence St. in Durham. A Durham first responder provided initial evaluation of the patient.

1:43 p.m. — A 25-year-old man having a seizure in the back yard of a home in the 500 block of S. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:52 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Wesley by an EagleMed helicopter ambulance.

6:47 p.m. — The 90-year-old earlier taken to HCH was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Woodlawn. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:20 p.m.

MONDAY

11:40 a.m. — A 69-year-old man who fell and hurt his knee at a residence in the 100 block of S. Wilson St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:16 p.m. — A 25-year-old man bitten at Hilltop Manor in Marion by an insect to which he reportedly was allergic declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
