DISPATCHES
Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
JULY 9
12:14 p.m. — A 26-year-old man who fell and hurt his shoulder at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.
2:30 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman who fell at a residence in the 400 block of N. Spruce St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially was dispatched, but the call was changed to Marion ambulance.
7:08 p.m. — A 54-year-old woman having an allergic reaction to new medication at a house on 290th Rd. near Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Lincolnville first responders and Tampa ambulance also was dispatched, but the call to Tampa ambulance was canceled before the ambulance arrived. Dispatchers neglected to provide an address with any of the three initial pages.
9:40 p.m. — What was reported as a backyard fire in the 100 block of S. Washington St. in Burns was determined by Burns firefighters to have been an unreported controlled burn inside a stock tank.
9:51 p.m. — A fire alarm at a farmhouse near 240th and Jade Rds. was canceled by the property owner before Hillsboro firefighters arrived. Dispatchers initially informed Burns firefighters instead of Hillsboro firefighters.
JULY 10
No dispatches.
THURSDAY
6:17 p.m. — A 53-year-old man having trouble breathing at a mobile home in the 600 block of E. Marion Ave. in Goessel was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder also answered the call. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:48 p.m.
9 p.m. — A 55-year-old man losing consciousness at a home in the 400 block of S. Main St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
FRIDAY
2:31 a.m. — A 47-year-old man having seizures at a rental home in the 100 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
2:40 p.m. — An 87-year-old man who fell and hit his head at a home in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
4:37 p.m. — Dispatchers asked Peabody’s fire chief to contact them by telephone. Almost an hour later, he reported there was no fire at Westview Manor but that an alarm company technician had been called to investigate a fault in the nursing home’s alarm system.
5:35 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was sent back to the same home in the 200 block of S. Date St. for another report of a fall, this time in a garage. The patient again declined to be taken to a hospital.
6:27 p.m. — Two people injured in a motorcycle accident on US-77 south of 180th Rd. were taken to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Alternating reports of whether one person or two people were injured led to Hillsboro ambulance repeatedly being dispatched and then told to stand down. Eventually, Marion ambulance attendants chose to transport both patients. Marion firefighters and rescue squad members also were dispatched. Marion ambulance returned to Marion at 9:57 p.m.
SATURDAY
8:46 a.m. — A 49-year-old man who cut his arm with a saw in the 300 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded.
11:34 a.m. — The man who cut his arm was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:37 p.m., stopping first in Hillsboro for supplies.
6:02 p.m. — A Tampa ambulance attendant and the county emergency manager reported a “humongous” cottonwood tree blocking Indigo Rd. north of 340th Rd.
7:38 p.m. — A 74-year-old man having chest pains at a rental home in the 700 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:52 p.m.
SUNDAY
2:32 a.m. — A 28-year-old man having what were described as psychiatric issues at a Homestead Affordable Housing apartment in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
6:44 a.m. — A 93-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
8:22 a.m. — Before returning to its station, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Peabody Health and Rehab. Marion ambulance opted to take the call instead. Ambulance attendants asked for a supervisor and law enforcement officers to be dispatched as well because the patient, whose pulse-oxygen level was low, became combative. A deputy already was in Peabody, which had no police on duty, investigating a patient’s complaint at another nursing home, Westview Manor. The Peabody Health and Rehab patient ended up being taken to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:53 a.m.
11:59 a.m. — Fire in a commercial trash container at 3rd and Madison Sts. in Hillsboro was put out within 10 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.
12:04 p.m. — A 90-year-old man who overheated and fell outside a farmhouse near 190th and Kanza Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded to the call.
12:36 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance busy, Marion ambulance was assigned to transfer a patient from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:25 p.m.
2:15 p.m. — A 79-year-old man having trouble getting out of bed at a home in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded to the call. Attendants had to ask dispatchers whether the call was in Peabody.
MONDAY
11:16 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was sent back to the same address in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody, again for a man who could not get out of bed. He was taken to NMC Health. After being pages three times, Peabody firefighters helped lift the patient. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:25 p.m.
