Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

FEB. 18

7 a.m. — A 3-year-old girl having trouble breathing at a home in the 500 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The county’s interim ambulance director arrived shortly before the ambulance did. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:14 a.m.

3:46 p.m. — A 76-year-old woman not responding normally at a house in the 200 block of W. 8th St. in Florence was taken to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado, by Marion ambulance. A Burns firefighter warned ambulance attendants that portions of 8th St. were drifted closed. The ambulance returned to Marion at 6:28 p.m.

5:15 p.m. — Peabody, Florence, and Marion firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the attic of a farmhouse near 170th and Remington Rds. After being asked by a Hillsboro firefighter, dispatchers said they had accidentally paged Florence instead of Hillsboro. The county’s emergency manager and Hillsboro ambulance also responded. Soon afterward, however, Marion firefighters arrived and told all other units to stand down as they could find no evidence of a fire.

6:43 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters determined that a smoke alarm at Jost Hall on the Tabor College campus was caused by food burning in a microwave oven.

8:29 p.m. — An 80-year-old man who fell at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:04 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by for 25 minutes in the 100 block of Santa Fe St. in Marion for undisclosed reasons.

feb. 19

1:28 a.m. — A 68-year-old man with increasing neck and head pain after failing several days earlier in the 400 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:50 p.m. — Marion ambulance briefly was dispatched for a 76-year-old woman who fell at Florence Public Library, but a Florence firefighter radioed that the woman did not want an ambulance.

10:25 p.m. — A 32-year-old man having a seizures, reportedly because of alcohol withdrawal, at a farmhouse near 210th and Bison Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

4:14 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm sounding at a home in the 900 block of E. D St. was determined by Hillsboro’s fire chief to be a false alarm caused by a weak battery. Other firefighters were told to stand by while he checked the alarm.

5:03 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman hallucinating at a home in the 100 block of Lakeshore Dr. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance. Ambulance attendants asked for law enforcement to also be dispatched as a precaution and questioned whether residents of the house were aware of the call.

3:45 p.m. — A 91-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance on an emergency basis from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to the Hillsboro at 9:05 p.m. after stopping in Marion for supplies.

FRIDAY

10:07 a.m. — An 87-year-old woman with a fractured hip was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:25 p.m.

10:54 a.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance on another call, an 80-year-old man with a history of dementia who fell at Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.

1:34 p.m. — A 12-year-old girl who suffered a seizure and was found unresponsive at Hillsboro Middle School was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:28 p.m. — A 43-year-old woman with a bowel obstruction was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:36 p.m.

9:50 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman suffering from influenza and labored breathing at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

SATURDAY

12:02 a.m. — A 65-year-old man possibly suffering from sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:06 a.m.

11:36 a.m. — A 76-year-old man who fell at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion after recent hip replacement surgery declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

7:17 p.m. — Hillsboro, Marion, Durham, and Tampa firefighters and Marion ambulance were dispatched for a report of a fire inside a farmhouse near 240th and Nighthawk Rd. Marion firefighters checked the house with a thermal imaging camera. Most responding units were told within half an hour that they would not be needed.

SUNDAY

9:46 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman wrongly thought to have suffered at stroke at a home in the 100 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Dispatchers initially called Hillsboro ambulance to Lincoln St. in Hillsboro but corrected their error.

9:51 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance and Goessel first responders were dispatched to Bethesda Home in Goessel to help administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a woman in her 60s. Tampa ambulance briefly was told to stand by at Canada in case of additional calls but was told to stand down before it arrived.

11:51 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a house in the 900 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

9:03 a.m. — A 53-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:19 a.m. — A sheriff’s deputy, Hillsboro ambulance, and the county’s ambulance director were called after a death was reported at a residence on Hill Rd. at Marion County Lake.

3:11 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell in the 100 block of W. 4th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

3:48 p.m. — A Marion firefighter observed an unreported controlled burn on 170th Rd. east of K-15. At the time, he noted that someone was tending the fire, but when Hillsboro’s fire chief investigated, it appeared to be unattended and firefighters were dispatched to extinguish it. Firefighters remained at the site until 5:07 p.m.

5:20 p.m. — A 99-year-old woman who had trouble breathing after physical therapy at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.
