Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 18

3:11 p.m. — An 86-year-old man needing a surgical consultation for a bowel obstruction was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to McPherson Center for Health.

4:20 p.m. — A 65-year-old man who collapsed and was having trouble breathing at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken in critical condition by Marion ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. Dispatchers told ambulance attendants that Westview personnel hung up on them after refusing to move the patient to check his breathing.

MARCH 19

12:50 a.m. — An 80-year-old man suffering abdominal pain at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:54 a.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance on the previous call, Marion ambulance was sent to the 300 block of W. D St. in Hillsboro for a 20-year-old man having chest pains. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

THURSDAY

2:36 p.m. — A small grass fire near South and Main Sts. in Lehigh was extinguished within two minutes by a single Lehigh firefighter using a resident’s garden hose.

4:16 p.m. — A 76-year-old woman with an orthopedic issue was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

FRIDAY

1:19 a.m. — A 37-year-old woman with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.

5:02 a.m. — Hillsboro, Durham, Goessel, and Lehigh firefighters spent an hour battling a fire that destroyed a shed and spread to trees near 230th and Eagle Rds. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched.

11:26 a.m. — An 83-year-old man with internal hemorrhaging was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.

1:25 p.m. — A 64-year-old man sent to Westview Manor after suffering a stroke three days earlier but needing more care was transferred to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by at Nighthawk Rd. and US-56 in case of additional calls until Marion ambulance returned to the county at 1:51 p.m.

5:20 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters extinguished a small grass fire near 150th and Indigo Rds. within 15 minutes then remained doing mop-up work for 25 more minutes. A task force of firefighters from Marion, Lincolnville, Goessel, and Peabody initially was dispatched as well but later was told to stand down.

7:46 p.m. — A 57-year-old woman needing intensive care was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.

SATURDAY

8:55 a.m. — Without radioing as usual that it would be out of its station, Marion ambulance went to Marion County Jail and remained there, parked in the rear, until 2:15 p.m.

5:05 p.m. — An 81-year-old man drifting in and out of consciousness with low blood sugar at a home in the 400 block of S. Vernon St. in Lehigh was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:26 p.m. — A slow-moving grass fire that grew out of control at K-15 and 140th Rd. was brought under control within 10 minutes by Goessel firefighters, who performed mop-up for 50 more minutes.

11:15 p.m. — A grass fire reported on US-56/77 between Lost Springs and Lincolnville was determined by Lost Springs firefighters to have been a controlled burn reported earlier.

SUNDAY

10:26 a.m. — Lost Springs firefighters were dispatched to US-56/77 and 340th Rd. for what initially was reported to be a rekindled controlled burn but later was determined to be additional intentional burning on a day when burning was not allowed. The fire was extinguished within 50 minutes; mop-up continued for 40 more minutes.

10:34 a.m. — A task force of firefighters from Marion, Lincolnville, Peabody, Hillsboro, Goessel, and Ramona joined Burdick, Council Grove, and Herington firefighters in battling a large grass fire near 2200 Rd. and BB Ave. north of Diamond Springs in Morris County. The task force arrived at 11:36 p.m. Elements of it remained on the scene until 3:17 p.m.

10:52 a.m. — Again, without radioing that it was leaving its station, Marion ambulance went to Marion County Jail, initially parking in back and later in front of the building.

12:50 p.m. — A 59-year-old man coughing up blood at Peabody Health and Rehab was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health.

2:46 p.m. — A 69-year-old man with abdominal pain was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to McPherson Center for Health.

2:55 p.m. — A report of a death at a home near Random Rd. and Trail Rd. at Marion County Lake was confirmed by Hillsboro ambulance attendants, who remained at the home until a coroner arrived at 4:11 p.m.

3:17 p.m. — A 15-to-20-acre grass fire reportedly started by a transformer overheating near oil tanks at 60th and Timber Rds. was battled for 1½ hours by Peabody, Florence, and Burns firefighters. Some Peabody firefighters responded directly from the Morris County fire. With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances busy, Tampa ambulance also was dispatched from 37 miles away, arriving at 4:12 p.m.

3:47 p.m. — With other departments already deployed, Marion, Goessel, and Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle that exploded twice and was enveloped in fire after hitting a deer on US-50 near 80th Rd. between Peabody and Florence. Some Peabody firefighters diverted from the fire on 60th and Timber Rds., were first to arrive, extinguished the bulk of the fire within 10 minutes, and told departments other than Marion to stand down. Firefighters remained on the scene until 4:27 p.m.

6:08 p.m. — A 61-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

MONDAY

1:09 a.m. — At the request of Herington firefighters, Lincolnville and Lost Springs firefighters spent nearly 3½ hours helping fight a fire that fully engulfed a home near CC Ave. and 2700 Rd., southeast of Burdick in Morris County.

3:51 p.m. — At the request of Herington firefighters, Lost Springs and Lincolnville firefighters spent more than three hours helping fight a grass fire involving structures between Burdick and Herington near 2900 Rd. and X Ave. in Morris County.
