Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 8

1:31 a.m. — A 91-year-old man who fell out of his recliner and suffered cuts on his face at a farmhouse near 110th and Mustang Rds. was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

12:03 p.m. — A 51-year-old man with stomach and chest pain who vomited blood at a home in the 600 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:19 p.m. — A 75-year-old man with diabetic complications at a home in the 700 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody decided to go to a hospital by private vehicle instead of Hillsboro ambulance, which was operating out of a vehicle that previously served as Peabody ambulance.

3:56 p.m. — After swapping vehicles in Marion, Hillsboro ambulance returned to HCH to transfer what appeared to be its 12:03 p.m. patient to McPherson Center for Health.

4:48 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance still on its way to McPherson, Marion ambulance was sent to Parkside Homes in Hillsboro to transfer an ailing 82-year-old man to HCH.

5:18 p.m. — With both full-time ambulances not available, Tampa ambulance was sent to Hillsboro for a man who tripped, fell, and suffered a head injury in the 300 block of E. A St. Hillsboro first responders arrived within four minutes, provided initial care, and took the man to his home across the street until the ambulance arrived 21 minutes later. The injured man decided to go to HCH by private vehicle instead of the ambulance.

7:08 p.m. — A caller was told by dispatchers how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation for what was described as an elderly woman not breathing at a farmhouse near 40th and Pawnee Rds. Marion ambulance arrived 22 minutes after the initial call. Hillsboro ambulance arrived three minutes later. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by until 9 p.m. at Canada in case of additional calls. No resolution of the call was broadcast. Marion ambulance returned to its station at 9:36 p.m.

8:26 p.m. — Returning from the call near 40th and Pawnee Rds., Hillsboro ambulance was sent to the 500 block of W. 1st St. in Hillsboro for a dizzy 82-year-old woman who fell and hurt her hip and shoulder. The ambulance arrived 20 minutes later and took the woman to HCH.

apRIL 9

1:29 a.m. — What appeared to be the patient from the previous call was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, with a fractured hip. A medic reported returning to the ambulance’s station at 2:58 a.m., inexplicably adding that she was “preparing the sacrificial lamb.”

8:38 a.m. — A 95-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation who fell and hurt her hip and thigh at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance, operating out of what normally is a backup vehicle.

10:54 a.m. — An 89-year-old man with possible aortic dissection was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

11:26 a.m. — A controlled burn that grew out of control, threatening a wind turbine near120th and Sunflower Rds., was contained within 30 minutes by Florence firefighters.

5:37 p.m. — Peabody firefighters spent an hour monitoring a controlled burn near Mustang and 110th Rds.

5:54 p.m. — A confused 83-year-old woman who pulled over and thought she might have suffered a stroke while driving a pickup near the US-56/77/K-150 roundabout was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:01 p.m. — An uninjured 91-year-old man who fell at a farm near 110th and Mustang Rds. was helped up by Peabody firefighters who had been nearby, monitoring a controlled burn. Hillsboro ambulance initially was called, but attendants were told before they arrived that they would not be needed.

7:29 p.m. — Peabody firefighters spent half an hour monitoring a controlled burn at 80th and Old Mill Rds. They also monitored a controlled burn at 9th St. and Prairie Lawn Rd.

8:17 p.m. — What appeared to be the woman brought in from the US-56/77/K-150 roundabout was diagnosed as having suffered a stroke and transferred by Marion ambulance, still using a backup vehicle, to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

THURSDAY

7:38 a.m. — An 88-year-old man unable to get out of bed because of chronic back pain at a home in the 400 block of N. Coble St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the patient.

6:25 p.m. — A 73-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

FRIDAY

1:35 p.m. — A 53-year-old woman with stroke-like symptoms was transferred by Marion ambulance, still using a backup vehicle, from St. Luke to Wesley.

3:20 p.m. — A controlled burn that grew out of control near 180th Rd. between Chisholm Trail and Diamond Rds. was contained within 20 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

SATURDAY

9:26 a.m. — A 16-year-old boy who may have broken a rib when he was bucked off a horse inside a corral behind a house in the 900 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:05 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman in pain after falling earlier in the day at a farm near 300th and Nighthawk Rds. headed to St. Luke aboard Tampa ambulance before a Hillsboro attendant told the Tampa attendants to divert to NMC Health. Tampa firefighters helped lift the woman.

1:41 p.m. — Durham firefighters notified dispatchers of a rekindled fire in soybean stubble near 270th and Jade Rds. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 15 minutes.

1:53 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman drifting in and out of consciousness with altered mental state at a home in the 300 block of Lombard St. in Lincolnville was taken on an emergency basis by Marion ambulance back to HCH, where she recently had been treated for septic shock. Medics asked for air ambulances, but none were available in an acceptable timeframe. Lincolnville first responders arrived seven minutes before the ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance and an off-duty emergency medical technician also responded.

3:03 p.m. — A LifeStar air ambulance transferred a patient from St. Luke to Kansas Heart.

3:34 p.m. — Marion firefighters asked city crews to address an issue of excessive smoke from the city’s tree dump.

4:52 p.m. — Marion firefighters were called to the dump after smoking brush burst into flames. The flames were extinguished within 30 minutes, but firefighters reported that brush would continue to smolder and produce smoke.

8:27 p.m. — Marion firefighters were called back to the dump after embers from the brush pile caught nearby trees on fire. They remained at the dump for a little more than an hour.

SUNDAY

5 p.m. — A 22-year-old woman having trouble breathing with slurred speech and having vomited blood at a home in the 700 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

4:22 p.m. — Fire reported to be in a ditch along US-50 near Bluestem Rd. was not found by Florence firefighters.
