Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MAY 6

12:41 a.m. — A 50-year-old man suspected of having kidney stones was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:16 a.m.

10:28 a.m. — Although the call initially went to Marion ambulance, Hillsboro ambulance ended up transferring a 79-year-old man with anemia from St. Luke to Newman Regional Health, Emporia. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:25 p.m.

MAY 7

12:07 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman with dementia reporting weakness and pain at a rental home in the 300 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

5:04 a.m. — A 91-year-old man who fell and injured his hip at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:40 a.m.

6:09 a.m. — A 77-year-old man having trouble breathing at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:01 a.m.

With both full-time ambulances out of the county, Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 7:07 a.m., when a new shift came on duty and could activate a backup ambulance in case of additional calls. Only one emergency medical technician was available with Tampa ambulance, but a Hillsboro first responder also was available.

2:35 p.m. — A caller attempted cardio-pulmonary resuscitation even though a man at a home in the 400 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro appeared dead. Hillsboro ambulance attendants officially pronounced him dead.

7:51 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman with cardiac problems was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:42 p.m.

10:43 p.m. — An unspecified patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:28 a.m.

THURSDAY

3:54 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman with a brain bleed was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:29 a.m.

3:27 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters spent 20 minutes supervising a small, controlled burn in the 400 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro.

3:57 p.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm in the 200 block of S. Madison St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

6:16 p.m. — A 71-year-old man who suffered a stroke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:46 p.m.

7:32 p.m. — Marion firefighters were dispatched for a vehicle smoking in the roadway on Sunflower Rd. near 130th Rd., but the call was canceled by a sheriff’s deputy before they arrived.

8:06 p.m. — A 3-year-old who put his or her hospitalized mother’s heart and other medication into his mouth at a home in the 200 block of W. 5th St. in Tampa but did not swallow them was checked by Tampa ambulance attendants but not taken to a hospital. Marion ambulance also responded, arriving 15 minutes after Tampa ambulance.

FRIDAY

1:23 a.m. — An 81-year-old man with unspecified medical issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:49 a.m.

7:41 p.m. — A 64-year-old man shaking for unknown reasons at a home in the 500 block of E. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:27 p.m. — Smoke reported to be of undetermined origin in the 400 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was determined by Peabody firefighters to have been caused by a mower flipping over.

11:01 p.m. — A 65-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:40 a.m.

SATURDAY

12:27 p.m. — What was reported as a carbon monoxide alarm at Mennonite Brethren Foundation offices in Hillsboro was determined to be a false alarm that was not necessarily for carbon monoxide.

8:37 p.m. — A 60-year-old man with an infection was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:33 p.m.

SUNDAY

8:30 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman with congested lungs at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:10 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman bit on a leg by a dog involved in a fight with another dog in the 300 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Police also were dispatched.

9:57 p.m. — Marion ambulance checked but did not take to a hospital a driver involved in a wreck in which airbags deployed on US-56/77 south of 230th Rd.

MONDAY

12:51 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance spent two hours transferring a patient from HCH to an air ambulance at Hillsboro airport.

3:43 p.m. — An 88-year-old man suffering head pain in the 500 block of Columbus St. in Tampa after a fall the day before was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance.

7:23 p.m. — Despite cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and use of an automatic defibrillator by Florence firefighters who were first on the scene, an unresponsive man with a pacemaker who fell in a bathroom at a home in the 100 block W. 4th St. was pronounced dead by Marion ambulance attendants. Hillsboro ambulance also responded, but attendants were told they would not be needed.

10:57 p.m. — A 67-year-old woman her hit her head on a bed at Peabody Health and Rehab was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Francis after being diverted there by NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 132 a.m.
