1:38 a.m. — A 64-year-old man with sepsis and respiratory distress was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:54 a.m., announcing with laughter “the wayward traveler has returned back to town.”

6:42 a.m. — An unconscious 88-year-old man at a home in the 1000 block of Main St. in Marion was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance. Dispatchers initially assigned the call to Hillsboro ambulance, but Marion ambulance attendants said they would handle it instead. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:36 a.m.

1:21 p.m. — A 75-year-old man with abdominal pain was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC.

2:49 p.m. — Apparently having finished the call to NMC, Marion ambulance attendants told dispatchers they would be returning an unspecified hospice patient to a residence near 130th and Kanza Rds. Hillsboro ambulance attendants announced that they would be going to that address to help lift the patient but would remain available for other calls. The two ambulances were back in their quarters by 3:51 p.m.

7:53 p.m. — A 60-year-old man with chest pains was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:44 p.m.

JUNE 11

9:37 p.m. — An uninjured, possibly intoxicated man in his 80s at a residence on Random Rd. at Marion County Lake was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital. Dispatchers told ambulance attendants that deputies “allegedly” were en route but decided not to respond because the man was not injured and not combative.

10:17 p.m. — Twelve minutes after returning to their station, Marion ambulance attendants were sent to the 700 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion for a man in his 70s who was not breathing. Hillsboro ambulance also responded but was called off before it arrived when Marion ambulance attendants pronounced the man dead.

10:44 p.m. — En route back to its station, Marion ambulance was diverted to a home in the 500 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion to take a 65-year-old woman with chest pains to St. Luke.

11:07 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still at St. Luke, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for a diabetic man in his 70s who fainted and was reported to be having trouble breathing at a home in the 400 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody. Ambulance attendants asked for Peabody firefighters to be dispatched, and Marion ambulance planned to respond as well. Both did even after a Hillsboro ambulance attendant said they would not be needed because he was “familiar with the patient.” Dispatchers eventually got them to disregard the call. The ambulance stayed at the residence providing unspecified treatment until 12:25 a.m. The man then declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:23 p.m. — Marion firefighters were sent to 700 block of S. Freeborn St. to help funeral home workers lift the body of the man who was pronounced dead there.

Hillsboro ambulance also responded and asked for Tampa ambulance to stand by at Canada in case of additional calls. A Tampa ambulance attendant informed dispatchers that only one emergency medical technician was available. The lone EMT was told to go to the Hillsboro ambulance station where a Hillsboro first responder would be paged if needed. Tampa ambulance was sent back to Tampa at 11:42 a.m. Marion ambulance returned to its station at 12:09 p.m.; Hillsboro ambulance, at 2:34 p.m. While Hillsboro ambulance was en route back, a request from HCH to transfer a patient to NMC was withdrawn.
