Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

AUG. 5

8:06 a.m. — A 63-year-old woman who fell in a shower at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, declined to be taken to a hospital by a backup ambulance based in Marion.

7:48 p.m. — A 69-year-old man who fell was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

AUG. 6

11:56 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman with cardiac issues was transferred by the Marion backup ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Wesley.

2:46 p.m. — A fire alarm at Westview Manor in Peabody was determined by Peabody’s fire chief to be a false alarm.

THURSDAY

5:30 p.m. — A 58-year-old man not feeling well at Salem Home in Hillsboro was transferred to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:35 p.m. — A 97-year-old woman who hurt her back in a fall earlier in the day in the 300 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by the backup Marion ambulance.

10:33 p.m. — What appeared to be the same patient, now diagnosed with a neurological condition, was transferred by the backup ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

FRIDAY

3:28 p.m. — A 47-year-old man with low potassium in his blood was transferred by the backup ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.

5:09 p.m. — With Marion ambulance out of the county, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for a report of a driver slumped over on US-77 near 120th Rd., but sheriff’s deputies could not find the vehicle.

SATURDAY

12:54 a.m. — Fire destroyed a house in the 200 block of N. Vernon St. in Lehigh. Firefighters from Hillsboro, Durham, and Goessel initially concentrated on preventing embers from spreading to adjacent structures and continued to battle the fire for 3½ hours. Hillsboro ambulance provided rehabilitation for firefighters. Lehigh firefighters continued at the scene until 10:09 a.m.

1:50 p.m. — A man hit by a sport-utility vehicle while operating an all-terrain vehicle on Indigo Rd. north of 170th Rd. was taken in critical condition to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance and then transferred by LifeSave helicopter to Wesley. An ambulance supervisor and Hillsboro firefighters also responded. Marion ambulance was repositioned to Hillsboro in case of additional calls.

4:36 p.m. — Lehigh firefighters returned to address rekindling in the 200 block of N. Vernon St. from the fire that destroyed a house in the 200 block of E. Case St. earlier in the day.

SUNDAY

12:52 p.m. — A fire and carbon monoxide alarm at a home on Lakeshore Dr. near Random Rd. at Marion County Lake was determined by Marion’s fire chief to have been a false alarm caused by residents changing batteries. Only one other Marion firefighter responded.

MONDAY

9:04 a.m. — A 78-year-old man, dizzy, pale, and not responding normally at a home in the 700 block of E. Weldon St. in Marion, was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by the Marion backup ambulance. The address initially reported proved to be a vacant lot, but ambulance attendants located the patient at a home next door.

1:50 p.m. — A 45-year-old woman, dizzy and feeling ill at a home in the 500 block of Lawrence Ave. in Durham, was taken to HCH by the former Peabody ambulance, now being used by Tampa ambulance attendants. A Durham first responder provided initial evaluation.
