Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

AUG. 19

12:45 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was asked by law enforcement in Peabody to stand by at Dollar General to treat a possible stabbing victim. Officers apparently had difficulty obtaining entry to the residence where the incident may have occurred. More than two hours later, when another ambulance call came in, attendants were told they no longer needed to stand by.

2:03 p.m. — A 39-year-old woman who may have suffered a heart attack at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not respond. A backup ambulance based in Marion was relocated to Hillsboro for portions of the call.

4:55 p.m. — A smoky fire dripping flames from a camper near several dozen hay bales at 110th and Mustang Rds. was extinguished in less than an hour by Peabody, Hillsboro, and Goessel firefighters. The county emergency manager and Hillsboro ambulance also responded.

8:17 p.m. — Although the call initially went to Marion ambulance, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a 69-year-old woman with cardiac issues from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

AUG. 20

5:59 a.m. — A 63-year-old woman who may have suffered a stroke at a home in the 100 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by the Marion backup ambulance.

2:10 p.m. — A 68-year-old woman with a bleeding artery was transferred by the Marion backup ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

2:37 p.m. — An unresponsive 84-year-old woman with rapid breathing at a farmhouse near 100th and Pawnee Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. A Peabody firefighter was called to drive the ambulance after the woman stopped breathing. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by near Canada in case of additional calls.

4:36 p.m. — Tampa ambulance, standing by in Canada, was sent to the 200 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody and took to Hillsboro Community Hospital a 69-year-old man with a swollen hand.

8:30 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman with lung congestion was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Bethesda Home in Goessel for evaluation at NMC Health.

THURSDAY

2:26 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance and Goessel first responders apparently not available, Marion ambulance was dispatched for a 77-year-old man who fell at a farm near Diamond Rd. and the Marion/Harvey County line. Moundridge ambulance also was called but was not available. The man ended up declining to be taken to a hospital.

2:56 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance, now available to take calls, was sent along with an ambulance supervisor for a 67-year-old woman who fell at a farm near 230th and Indigo Rds. The supervisor arrived first and canceled the call as the woman declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:20 p.m. — A 69-year-old man with possible sepsis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

5:48 p.m. — A small grass fire at 360th and Limestone Rds. was extinguished within half an hour by Tampa firefighters.

6:42 p.m. — Returning from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was alerted that it would be needed to transfer an unspecified HCH patient to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance arrived at 7:38 p.m. and transferred the patient.

8:53 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was ordered to stand by in the 300 block of N. Main St. in Hillsboro for a 41-year-old man whom Hillsboro police wanted taken to HCH for a psychological evaluation. Ambulance attendants evaluated the patient as emotionally disturbed, but he declined to be taken by them to the hospital and instead was taken by police.

11:22 p.m. — A pregnant, epileptic 18-year-old suffering a seizure at a home in the 200 block of W. 2nd St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by the Marion backup ambulance, whose attendants volunteered to go instead of Hillsboro ambulance, which initially was dispatched.

FRIDAY

3:48 a.m. — An 89-year-old man who fell and hurt his head and elbow at Marion Assisted Living was helped up and taken to St. Luke by the Marion backup ambulance.

2:13 p.m. — A driver who hurt his neck, shoulder, and back when his pickup truck ran off K-15 and into a ditch near 110th Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders and firefighters initially evaluated the driver.

8:11 p.m. — A caller asked for Marion ambulance attendants to check on a woman in her late 60s who might be having trouble breathing at a home in the 900 block of Marion St. in Florence. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

SATURDAY

12:01 p.m. — An automated iPhone alert of an accident on US-50 between Mustang and Nighthawk Rds. was determined by Peabody firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy to be a false alarm, caused by a phone being thrown out of a vehicle’s window before Hillsboro ambulance arrived.

3:19 p.m. — Marion ambulance was called to St. Luke to help lift a patient at the hospital’s emergency entrance.

11:57 p.m. — A person in the 200 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody whose jaw was injured and whose face was cut in a fight was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

SUNDAY

7:49 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman who fell and hurt her head at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:59 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman with trouble breathing at Bethesda apartments in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Dispatchers initially misreported the address as being at Bethesda Home on Main St. instead of its associated housing on Marion St.

5:23 p.m. — A 74-year-old woman with a migraine headache and respiratory issues at a duplex on Victory Ln. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

10:36 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm caused by a candle.

MONDAY

8:06 a.m. — A 65-year-old woman who fell and lay on the floor of a rental home in the 500 block of N. Cedar St. for several hours was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

4:55 p.m. — A 75-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially responded as well but was called off.

5:42 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters verified that a cooking accident was responsible for spreading smoke through Tabor College townhouses.

7:34 p.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to trasnfer a 75-year-old woman with respiratory failure from St. Luke to Wesley. Hillsboro ambulance , which also responded, opted to take the call instead. Marion’s fire chief was paged to drive the ambulance so both medics could tend to the patient. However, a LifeSafe helicopter ended up being called, and it transferred the patient instead.
